WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 10, 2023) -- To wrap up their Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) series with Lycoming College, the King's College baseball team fell, 8-5, at Lipo Field on Monday afternoon. With the loss, the Monarchs drop to 10-16 overall and 3-12 in the conference standings, while the Warriors improved to 8-16 with a 6-9 conference mark.
After a quick first inning, the Warriors jumped on the King's (10-16, 3-12 MAC Freedom) pitchers, plating three runs on three hits to jump ahead, 3-0. Both defenses settled in until the bottom of the third when the Monarchs got in the scoring column, using back-to-back one-out singles from
Gregory Ahlstrom and
Jacob Sutton to set up a two-out triple from
Nick Ciszak to pull the Monarchs within one, 3-2.
Lycoming (8-16, 6-9 MAC Freedom) had an immediate answer, tacking on five more runs on four hits in the next frame to take a daunting 8-2 lead over the Monarchs.
The Monarchs would rally in the bottom of the fifth, putting two runners on behind a single from Sutton and a hit by pitch drawn by
Will Hronich as
Chase Yochem hit a two-out single to right field to tack on another run for King's, pulling within 8-3 of the Warriors.
Both defenses settled in over the next two and a half innings before the King's bats came back alive in the bottom of the eighth, using singles from
Zach Day and
Ricky Hynick to drove in two more runs and cut the deficit to 8-5 heading into the final inning of regulation.
A strong outing by relief pitcher Jake Schilling held the Monarchs scoreless in the final frame as King's fell, 8-5, in the MAC Freedom contest to Lycoming on Monday afternoon at Lipo Field.
Sutton led the Monarchs with a 2-for-4 effort, scoring twice, while Ciszak drove in a team-best two RBIs.
Adin Hoderewski was awarded the loss as the starter, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits.
Brennen Schneider threw well in relief, throwing 5.1 inning s and holding Lycoming scoreless on two hits.
Kai Foster paced the Warriors with a 2-for-4 effort, scoring two runs and driving in one, while Joey Trout and Jack Kelly recorded two RBIs each in the win. Jake Wilber recorded the win, going for 5.0 innings and giving up three earned runs on six hits, while Schilling picked up the save in the final inning of work.
The Monarchs will be back in action at Lipo Field on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Penn State Wilkes-Barre in non-conference play. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
