NEWARK, NJ (September 16, 2023) –
Aspen Wallin records career high 12 saves in 2-1 loss to Rutgers-Newark Saturday night.
Saturday's contest saw an offense barrage for both King's College (1-3-1) and Rutgers-Newark (4-3). Although the score doesn't show it, in the first half alone saw King's notch eight shots and Rutgers-Newark record 11 shots. Both goalkeepers were at work as Wallin made four saves in the first half and Rutgers-Newark's goalkeeper, Katie McLaughlin, recorded six saves.
First year Brook Finlay, would score the opening goal of the game for the Monarchs after Scarlet Raider, McLaughlin saved a penalty kick, but allowed Finlay to score off the rebound to put the Monarchs ahead 1-0.
The Monarchs held their lead until Julia Nephew evened the score for the Scarlet Raiders in the 55
th minute, that was then followed by a second goal in the 62
nd minute by Rutgers-Newark's Vielka Fernandez.
Although the Monarchs fell 2-1 to the Scarlet Raiders, Wallin recorded eight additional saves in the second half keeping the Monarchs in the match until the final whistle. Finlay was a force on offense for the Monarchs taking six shots, all on target, and scored the loan goal for King's on the night.
Leah Sankey also placed both of her shots on net for the Monarchs as well.
Angelina Vargas,
Jenna Waldbillig, and
Maryanna Garcia also took one shot each for King's.
Newphew and Fernandez both scored for the Scarlet Raiders, taking four shots, each placing three on target. Lelila Ettayebi took 14 shots placing five on target for Rutgers-Newark. McLaughlin recorded eight saves in net.
The Monarchs will return home Tuesday and host SUNY Morrisville at McCarthy Stadium at 6pm.
