WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 23, 2023) -- Junior
Emma Clark scored both goals for the Monarchs as the King's College field hockey team reversed their early-season woes with a 2-1 overtime win over Neumann University on Saturday afternoon. With the win at McCarthy Stadium, the Monarchs improve to 1-8 overall, while the Knights drop to 1-7.
Â
King's (1-8) was on the attack early in this non-conference match up, firing off four shots in the opening 15 minutes, but each opportunity came up short to see the game remain at 0-0 heading into the second. Neumann (1-7) capitalized on their limited opportunities on the cage in the half, scoring with 1:52 remaining to hold the 1-0 edge at the break.
Â
It was a thrilling third period as King's regained control, using a fierce offensive attack throughout the quarter that saw
Hannah Chocallo fire a shot into the circle that Clark finished to break through and tie the game at 1-1 in the 41
st minute. The King's defense held Neumann without a shot through the fourth, but their offense came up short on their three attempts to see the game head into overtime on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Knights looked to capitalize on a two-on-one breakaway late into the overtime period, but the hustling effort of
Katey Shoemaker kept the visitors at bay, knocking the ball away from the Knights and giving King's possession. As time was winding down and the game seemed destined for a second overtime, it was
Jessie Smalley who worked her way into the shooting circle to find Clark yet again for the game winner in the 69
th minute to secure the 2-1 overtime victory for the Monarchs.
Â
Clark led King's with two goals on her team-high five shots with three on target. Smalley and Chocallo picked up points with their assists while also adding three shots each. Additionally,
Allie Chocallo,
Ashley Thalassinos, and
Davina Krappa got off attempts in the win.
Grace Venis earned her first career victory in the cage, holding the Knights scoreless in the final three periods.
Â
Jacki Connolly scored the Knights goal on an assist from Elle Smith, while Cadence Conti put up a team-best two shots in the loss. Caley Gee held King's scoreless in the opening 30 minutes, while Lindsey Naulty was awarded the loss, giving up both goals and making two saves in the final 39 minutes.
Â
As a team, the Monarchs fired off 14 shots with four on target, holding a 14-3 edge over Neumann. King's also had the advantage in penalty corners with a dominant 9-3 showing.
Â
King's will return back to McCarthy Stadium for their third consecutive home contest on Wednesday, September 27. The Monarchs will host Drew University at 7:00 p.m. in the non-conference match up.
