WILLIAMSPORT, PA (September 27, 2023) -- King's College women's soccer team dropped a nail-biter to Lycoming College Wednesday night 1-0.
There's not going to be many games that come as close as tonight's matchup did. The Monarchs (3-4-1) and the Warriors (4-1-3) both pounded each other's nets the entire game, but Lycoming was the only team to tally a goal on the night. After trading shots in the first 20 minutes, Lycoming's Haley Schafer gave the Warriors the early edge as she snuck the ball past
Aspen Wallin in the 24
th minute.
Although Schafers' goal was the only one to be scored during the game, King's never gave up, outshooting Lycoming 10-9 during the entire match. The Monarchs offense was charged by midfielder
Leah Sankey who took four shots, placing two of them on goal. Off the bench first year
Brooke Finlay put both of her shot attempts on frame, but they were unfortunately stopped by Lycoming goalkeeper Abbey Gerasimoff.
Angelina Vargas,
Ashley Dias,
Liz Porto, and
Gabriella Porchetta all had their attempt at a goal for the Monarchs, but with no luck as none of these efforts found the back of the net.
Lycoming's Mikayla Long lead the Warriors in shots with three, placing all on target. However, Monarch goalkeeper
Aspen Wallin denied all three attempts. Â Schafer was the Warrior that found the back of the goal, scoring on the only shot she put on frame.
Both goalkeepers duked it out as Wallin recorded six saves, edging out Schafer who picked up five saves.
Although the Monarchs outshot the Warriors 5-1 in the second half, the game equalizer never came and the Monarchs were handed their fourth loss of the season.
Looking ahead King's will host Arcadia University at McCarthy Stadium Saturday, September 30 at 7 p.m. in their first MAC Freedom matchup of the season.
