Finlay Scores First Collegiate Goal In 3-1 Loss to Drew

MADISON, NJ (September 3, 2023) -- Brooke Finlay scores first collegiate goal as King's College women's soccer falls to Drew University on the road 3-1.

King's (0-2-0) faced off against Drew (1-1-0) Sunday afternoon and found themselves playing tough defense early, successfully defending three corner kick attempts from the Rangers in the first 10 minutes of the match. Drew found the back of the net in the 17th minute as King's starting goalkeeper Ashlyn Crawford was faced with a 1-on-1 break away which led to a shot that bounced off the left post and into the net. Drew would score a second goal in the 22nd minute to give the Rangers an early 2-0 lead.

The Monarchs would then come to life as Maryanna Garcia and Madison Peacock took back-to-back shots that were both blocked by the Ranger defense. Peacock would continue her offensive attack moments later as she required Drew goalkeeper Sarah Crowley to make a save on another shot attempt, Peacock then found the ball off the rebound and missed just over the crossbar to keep the score 2-0 going into the half.

Drew scored early in the second half making the score 3-0, but in the 65th minute the Monarchs retaliated when Anya Chervak crossed the ball in from the right-side and would find Brooke Finlay who finished with a one-timer into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. The Monarchs carried this momentum in the second half as Peacock almost scored on a header off the foot of Liz Porto to nearly make it a one goal game. King's continued to pressure the remainder of the game but fell short to Drew, 3-1.

Finlay scored the first goal of the season for the Monarchs, while Peacock recorded four shots. Garcia, Megan Thompson, Eiland Brockett, Leah Sankey, and Mikaela Majcher all recorded one shot each for King's as well. Crawford, and Apsen Wallin split time in net for the Monarchs. Wallin recorded three saves, and Crawford recorded two saves in her first collegiate start.

The Monarchs will return to McCarthy Stadium Wednesday for their home opener against Immaculata University at 4 p.m.
