WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 30, 2023) -- Senior
Ashley Thalassinos had a career game for the Monarchs, scoring twice and assisting once, to lead the King's College field hockey team to a 4-1 non-conference win over Manhattanville College at McCarthy Stadium. With the senior day victory, the Monarchs improve to 2-9 overall, while the Valiants drop to 2-6.
Â
The Monarchs dominated this contest from start to finish. With her second shot of the game in the 8
th minute, Thalassinos found the back of the cage for her first career tally off a helper from
Emma Clark. The game returned to the midfield for the remainder of the period before entering the first break ahead, 1-0.
Â
Clark found Thalassinos on a breakaway 3:15 into the second quarter to help push the King's (2-9) advantage. The Monarchs continued to pester the Manhattanville (2-6) goal in the half, firing off a pair of shots off a set of penalty corners, but each opportunity came up short as the Monarchs maintained their 2-0 edge heading into halftime.
Â
Two more scores across a 4:16 span in the game clock, first from
Jessie Smalley on an assist from Thalassinos then the second from Clark, increased the King's lead to 4-0 early in the third. The hosts maintained possession for much of the waning minutes in the third before going into the final quarter with the scoreboard still reading, 4-0.
Â
It was a physical final 15 minutes as King's tried to push their lead, but the lone blemish in the stat sheet came with 25 seconds remaining in the contest. Manhattanville found the back of the cage on a breakaway by Megan Keaveney, but the Monarchs silenced any additional comeback push to secure the 4-1 win on senior day at McCarthy Stadium.
Â
Thalassinos recorded five points on a pair of goals and an assist on a team-leading six shots with five on target, while Clark totaled four points on a goal and two assists.
Hannah Chocallo fired off five shots, including three on the cage, to help lead a balanced attack from King's in the win.
Grace Venis picked up her second career win in the complete-game effort.
Â
Keaveney earned the lone goal on the Valiant's only shot in the game. Lidia Vasquez-Sinisi allowed two goals while making two saves in 17:27 of play, while Florence Harrison made six saves down the stretch for Manhattanville.
Â
Inside the stat sheet, the Monarchs dominated the shot column 18-1, as well as shots on the cage, 12-1, in the win. King's also had a 9-0 edge in penalty corners on Saturday.
Â
The Monarchs will wrap up their five-game home stand on Wednesday, October 4 as they host Lycoming College in a non-conference match up at 7:00 p.m.
