Men's Ice Hockey Defeats RV SUNY Cortland in Competitive Match Up

CORTLAND, NY (Jan. 13, 2023) - - King's College men's ice hockey team defeated the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons, who received votes in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online poll, 2-0 in an incredibly competitive match up this evening. Ethan Hersant and Mauro D'Alessandro were the Monarch's scorers, with D'Alessandro's goal coming in with just one second left in the game. Matt Bidini also had an impressive showing in goal, tying his season-best record for saves with 44.

Despite the Red Dragons outshooting the Monarchs 14-6 in the first period, King's prevented Cortland from capitalizing on any offensive opportunities for the entire opening 20 minutes of play. Bidini saved all 14 shots to lead the defense, while Hersant led the charge on offense, scoring the first goal with just over a minute left to play with assists from Kent Lee and Jackson Grozelle. The Monarchs went into the second period with a 1-0 lead over the Red Dragons.

Hungry for an equalizer, Cortland had 19 more shots on goal in the second period, but was still unable to find the back of the net. As a tough King's defense continued to hold the Red Dragons off, the Monarchs struggled to create offensive chances for themselves and only got five shots off in the period.

The third period continued to be intense on both sides of the puck as the Monarchs and Red Dragons went shot-for-shot throughout the entire first 18 minutes of the period. Both teams had nine shots on goal, but no luck sending the puck in. Cortland made a last minute attempt to score a game-tying goal and emptied its net to add an extra skater, but were unsuccessful as D'Alessandro scored for King's with just one second left in the game after receiving a pass from Jakub Viedemann. The Monarchs ultimately defeated the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons with a final score of 2-0.

The Monarchs return home to Revolution Ice Centre for a United Collegiate Hockey Conference two-game series against Nazareth next weekend, Friday Jan. 19 at 7 pm, and Saturday Jan. 20 at 3 pm.
