WILLIAMSPORT, PA (October 1, 2024) -- A competitive contest saw the score remain tied, 1-1, heading into the final minute of action, but a late goal spoiled the King's College field hockey team's efforts in a 2-1 setback at Lycoming College on Tuesday night. The Monarchs drop to 2-7 overall, while the Warriors improved to 6-4.
Â
It was an evenly contested match early on before Lycoming (6-4) got the first shot of the game off 4:53 into the first. The pace slowed again, but with 2:47 left in the period, the Warriors broke through and got on the board, 1-0.
Â
The hosts earned two penalty corners four minutes into the second, but
Emily Bollinger and the King's (2-7) defense remained steady. The Warriors got off another pair of shots before the Monarchs swung the momentum in their favor with a shot in the 24
th minute. With 18 seconds to go before the break,
Melanie Tlatenchi put a shot on frame that was saved by the Lycoming goalkeeper, but a second effort allowed King's to set up a penalty corner with time expiring. During the extra time,
Katey Shoemaker inserted the corner that found its way to
Shaylee Heffron for the game-tying goal as the teams entered the break tied, 1-1.
Â

Â
The Monarchs had the first look at breaking the stalemate as Tlatenchi put another shot on the cage. The Warriors then ramped up their attack, but the Monarch defense anchored by Bollinger remained sturdy, thwarting four shots and a pair of corners.
Emma Bealla gave King's a great look at a score in the 57
th minute, but when it seemed as though the game was destined for overtime, Lycoming found the back of the cage in the final 33 seconds out of a penalty corner to hand the Monarchs the 2-1 setback on the road on Tuesday night.
