WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 7, 2024) -- In their non-conference match up on Monday afternoon, the King's College field hockey team was tripped up by a talented Marywood University squad, 5-1, at McCarthy Stadium. With the setback, the Monarchs drop to 3-8 overall, while the Pacers improved to 8-4.
Marywood (8-4) got out to a quick start, posting three first-quarter goals. The King's (3-8) defense held steady through the first 6:37 before the Pacers tallied their first two scores a minute apart. The Monarchs locked back in before a late score in the 13
th minute put the visitors ahead, 3-0, heading into the first break.
It was a slow start to the second before Marywood fired three shots toward the cage into the 24
th minute, but King's answered with back-to-back penalty corners in the 26
th minute. The momentum shifted back in favor of their foes as the Pacers tacked on another goal to head into halftime with a 4-0 edge over King's.
Rowan Murray got the Monarchs on the board 2:24 into the third as the ball was sent into the circle, passed over by
Melanie Tlatenchi, and after a quick turn, Murray found the bottom left corner of the cage to close within 4-1.
Out of a Marywood corner, the Pacers pushed their advantage to 5-1 despite an initial stop by the defense, but the rest of the game slowed down the stretch. King's had one final look at the cage out of a penalty corner in the 55
th minute, but the shot off the stick of
Shaylee Heffron went just wide of the cage as the Monarchs fell, 5-1, in the non-conference match up on Monday.
Murray led the team with a goal off two shots, while Tlatenchi picked up a point with the assist.
Allie Chocallo made a defense save, and the goalkeeper duo of
Emily Bollinger and
Hannah Hagan tallied four and three saves, respectively.
Lany Straub paced the Marywood offense with a pair of goals, while Cydney Lahr totaled a game-high six shots with a goal and an assist. Sabrina Frazer earned the win as she played the first 41:22 of action in goal.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Wednesday night in front of their home crowd at McCarthy Stadium as they are set to host Albright College at 7:00 p.m.
