Clark's Heroics, Sophomore Duo Lift King's Over Albright in Thrilling Win

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 9, 2024) -- The dynamic sophomore duo of Shaylee Heffron and Davina Krappa got the King's College field hockey team on the board, but it was senior Emma Clark who scored with time expired as the Monarchs defeated the visiting Albright College, 3-2, on Wednesday night. With the non-conference win at McCarthy Stadium, the Monarchs improve to 4-8, while the Lions drop to 4-8.

The contest started slow with the first shot of the night coming 11:52 into the first as Clark sent an attempt on frame that was saved by Albright's (4-8) Kelsey McTaggart. The Lions fired off three shots and had one penalty corner in the final 2:52 as the game remained scoreless, 0-0, after the first quarter.

It was a different story in the second as Albright sent a flurry of shots at the King's (4-8) defense before finding their opening 7:26 into the second to take a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

The visitors had the early momentum in the third, tallying three shots and a penalty corner, but the Monarchs defense remained steady. With 4:50 to go in the frame, King's earned their own corner opportunity to set up a thrilling 1:18 of action.

Ellie Parra and Rowan Murray sent in shots that were thwarted by the Albright defense, but another corner with 3:32 to go in the third saw Krappa find Heffron to tie the game, 1-1. A late score by the Lions put Albright ahead, 2-1, heading into the final period.

Albright had the early edge in the fourth, but Emily Bollinger made yet another save to keep the game within reach. Just 2:34 into the quarter, King's made their move with back-to-back corners. On the second effort, Heffron inserted again before Krappa found her counterpart for the duo's second goal of the night to tie the game, 2-2, with 12 minutes to play.

The Lions did not go down without a fight, earning five corners and sending in four shots to just one of each for King's over the next 11:59 of the game clock. But, in the final seconds, Clark put a shot on frame and earned a penalty corner for the team as time expired. It seemed as though the game was destined for an extra period, but after batting the ball around, Ellie Parra found Clark who snuck the ball into the bottom left corner of the cage to secure the 3-2 for King's on Wednesday night.

Heffron scored her pair of goals on two shots, while Krappa added two assists with a shot. Clark scored the game-winner while totaling two shots, and Bollinger secured a season-high tying 10 saves in the win.

Chelsea Johnson had a goal and an assist on a team-high six shots to lead the Lions, while Kelsey McTaggart made five saves in the loss.

As a team, the Monarchs totaled 10 shots in the game with eight on frame while facing a slight 10-6 edge in penalty corners.

The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they open their Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) schedule on the road at FDU-Florham. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Madison, NJ.
