Women's Volleyball Produce a New Game Record in Saturday Split

NEWARK, NJ (November 2, 2024) -- The King's College women's volleyball defeated Medgar Evers 3-0 and fell to Rutgers-Newark 0-3 Saturday afternoon in The Golden Dome. The Monarchs are now 17-10 overall for the season. Morgan Williams (Jr.) climbs ladder with 1,254 digs in her career to make her ranked 6th in the program.  
 
vs. Medgar Evers – W, 3-0 (25-4, 25-5, 25-7):
King's controlled the first set right out of the gate with six straight aces by Riley McArdle (Fy.). From then on, the Monarchs had all the momentum and witnessed Jessica Menze (Fy.), Hannah Swinsburg (Fy.), Bryn Giordano (So.), Antonia Leary (Fy.), Milena Oberle (Fy.), and Ashley Webber (Fy.) all add tallies to the scoreboard. King's won the set 25-4.
 
The Monarchs continued their pursuit and defeated Medgar Evers (1-21) 25-5 to force a third and final set.
 
The Cougars opened up the third set with a 4-2 run. Though King's answered back and took control for the rest of the matchup. The Monarchs remained victorious 25-7.
 
King's accumulated 29 aces to break the record for total aces in a 3-game match. The team also recorded 23 kills on 21 assists, 19 digs, and a hitting percentage of .340. McArdle led the squad with four kills and six aces. Leary was right behind with her own four kills. Keely Hoban (Sr.) dished out 11 assists and Webber followed with nine. Bella Salvia (Jr.) and Devan Moses (Jr.) added six aces each. Giordano fueled the defense with nine digs.

vs. Rutgers-Newark – L, 0-3 (20-25, 23-25, 24-26):
King's began the first set with a 4-1 run that included tallies by Riley McArdle (Fy.) and Jessica Menze (Fy.). It was a battle from then on as Rutgers-Newark (13-16) developed a 6-3 burst to tie the matchup 7-7. The two adversaries went back-and-forth with each team trying to create a lead greater than two. The Scarlet Raiders were up 18-16 when they opened the gates with a 9-3 push to take the first set 25-20.
 
The second set was a series of runs with the Monarchs making the first punch with a 5-2 jolt that comprised of Hannah Swinsburg (Fy.), McArdle, Madisyn Heiser-Elsea (So.), Kathy Shepherd (Jr.), Ashley Webber (Fy.), and Bella Salvia (Jr.). Rutgers-Newark began to pester their visitors and was able to take the lead after a 13-2 spurt to make the score 15-10. It was 18-13 when King's came right back with an 8-2 push to get back on top. Though the Scarlet Raiders were not going down without a fight and the Monarchs ultimately lost 25-23.
 
It was a must win set for King's as the crowd witnessed 10 tied scores throughout the final round. King's was down 14-12 when they scored four straight points. Though Rutgers-Newark rallied back to regain their lead down the stretch. Salvia tacked on a kill to even it at 24-24 and keep the set alive, but the Scarlet Raiders produced two unanswered points to take the win, 26-24.
 
The Monarchs ended with 31 kills, 29 assists, six blocks, and 53 digs. Salvia had 11 kills and Keely Hoban (Sr.) passed out 19 helpers.  Webber and Heiser-Elsea had three blocks each. Morgan Williams fueled the defense with 27 digs.

Rutgers-Newark finished with 40 kills, 38 assists, 11 aces, six blocks, and 54 digs. Bella Foster earned 13 kills and Angelyse Orellana had 36 assists with six aces. On the defensive end, Maryann Ijeh collected five blocks and Elvin Karakaya added 16 digs to the stat sheet.

King's will finish the season on the road with a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom contest against FDU-Florham at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6th.
