Monarchs Overcome Owls in Overtime

Rutland, VT (NOVEMBER 29, 2024) – The King's College men's hockey will advance to the championship game of the Terry Moran Invitational Tournament following a 4-3 overtime win against the Owls of Keene State. Junior forward Denys Arkhypenko scored the game-winning goal to put the Monarchs on top.

The Owls wasted no time as Marcus Chrisafideis scored an unassisted goal 0:54 seconds into the first period. No other goals or penalties occurred through the remaining 19 minutes. In his first start of the season, sophomore goaltender Diego D'Alessandro tallied ten saves in the first period.

King's scored three goals in the second period as Johnny Malandruccolo and Alexander Ray combined to assist Kent Lee's goal at 6:14 to tie it 1-1. With some help from Mikey Harrel Jr., Luke Babilon scored less than 30 seconds later at 6:40 to give King's the 2-1 lead. Keene's Thor Hansen was penalized for holding at 15:16, putting the Monarchs on the first power play of the game. Thomas Soucy netted the third goal of the period with an assist from Ethan Hersant to extend the lead to 3-1 at 16:51.

The Owls answered back in the third period as Kyle Gonzalez scored 12 seconds into the period with an assist from Jack Lindholm, followed by another goal at 4:55, this time by Mike Collett with an assist from Payton Jones. Erik Borshchevsky was called for interference at 6:16 and Johnny Malandruccolo was called for tripping at 14:51. As time expired, the 3-3 score stood.

Keene's Sean Gray started overtime in the penalty box as he was called for tripping 27 seconds into play. Denys Arkhypenko sealed the deal for the Monarchs with a game-winning goal at 4:28 off assists from Shota Kaneko and Erik Borshchevsky. D'Alessandro concluded the night with 31 saves in goal.

King's men's ice hockey is back tomorrow to play the winner of tonight's game between Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and Castleton. Championship game puck drop is set for 4 p.m. at Spartan Arena.
