WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 13, 2023) -- The King's College women's lacrosse team fell short against cross town rival Wilkes on Wednesday evening. The Monarchs (1-4) lost 11-12 to the Colonels (2-5) in McCarthy Stadium.

Wilkes started the opening quarter 2-0 after goals by Maleah Cobham and Breanne Fulling in the first five minutes of play. King's answered back with
Kyleigh Dunworth (Jr.) connecting to
Emilee Schultz (So.) for a goal at 8:32. Dunworth was able to find the back of the net not once, but twice with a minute between each other to put the Monarchs up 3-2. King's continued their momentum with a goal by
Chloe Burke (Jr.) at 4:24 and in the final 18 seconds of the first quarter
Carli Komorowski (Jr.) netted a goal to make it 5-2 heading into the second quarter.

The Monarchs started the second quarter strong after a draw control win by
Ashley Dias (Jr.). Though the Colonels were able to get on the offensive end to score twice and be within one at 11:22.
Maria Schneider (So.) was able to net her first goal of the day at 9:51 during a free-position shot and a player-up. The final eight minutes were electric as both teams began trading goals seeing Wilkes tally up three goals and King's score two. The Monarchs withstood the Colonels run and maintained their lead 8-7 going into halftime.

Wilkes had the edge to start the third quarter, but King's were not going to shy away as Dias added a tally to the scoreboard at 13:06. The Monarchs held on and had Dunworth net her second goal of the day at 9:52. King's were able to stay on the offensive end for the remainder of the quarter, but their opponent was able to sneak in two more goals to get within one at the end of the third.

The fourth and final quarter was a battle with Wilkes searching to take the lead and King's looking to withstand their visitors. Dias added a tally at 10:09 to put the squad up two, but the Colonels wasted no time and scored 30 seconds later. Burke was able to win a draw control to gain an advantage and allow her team to take multiple shots at goal. At 5:22 Wilkes' Cobham found the back of net thanks to an assist by Ava Ward to tie the game. The Colonels took the lead after a timely goal by Cobham at 0:26. There were only eight seconds left when King's drew a foul and earned a free position shot. The last shot by the Monarchs was saved and King's fell short 11-12 at the end of the final buzzer.

The Monarchs finished with 31 shots, 23 shots on goal, 10 ground balls, three caused turnovers, and 10 draw control wins. Dunworth had three goals and three draw control wins. Dias earned two goals, three ground balls, and three draw control wins. In net,
Sidney Bush (Sr.) had seven saves.

The Colonels ended with 26 shots, 19 shots on goal, six ground balls, caused nine turnovers, and won 15 draw controls. Cobham led the team with four goals, caused two turnovers, and had five draw control wins. Ward followed with three goals, one assist, and three draw control wins. Samantha Scott had 12 saves for the day in goal.

King's will be on the road to take on Alvernia at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 16
th. They will return home to battle against Lycoming on March 20
th at 7 p.m.
