Slow Start Dooms Women's Lacrosse against Lebanon Valley

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 6, 2024) -- The King's College women's lacrosse team came out to a slow start on Saturday afternoon on their way to a 22-7 setback in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play at McCarthy Stadium. With the loss, the Monarchs fall to 1-10 overall and 0-2 in the conference standings, while the Flying Dutchmen improve to 6-5 with a 1-0 MAC Freedom mark.
 
Lebanon Valley (6-5, 1-0 MAC Freedom) stormed out to an 8-0 edge after the first period before Kyleigh Dunworth put King's (1-10, 0-2 MAC Freedom) on the board with a man-up goal with 13:31 to go in the second. The Dutchmen tallied two more scores, but Maria Schneider responded after receiving a pass from Emilee Schultz on the free position attempt to close within 10-2 with 11:19 to go before the half.
 
The teams traded goals down the stretch as King's recorded a free position goal from Dunworth at the 2:09 mark of the second then another tally from Schneider off an assist from Chloe Burke in the final 45 seconds to trail 12-4 at the break.
 
The Monarchs had a strong start to the third, going toe-to-toe with the Dutchmen on goals from Schneider, Kailey McGinley, and Dunworth to close within 14-7. The visitors silenced a comeback effort from King's, scoring the final three goals of the third to propel Lebanon Valley to the 22-7 final in the MAC Freedom match up at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
 
Schneider paced the offense with four points off a hat trick and an assist on four shots, adding three draw controls, while Dunworth also put up a hat trick off three shots. Burke picked up two points on a pair of assists while collecting a team-high three ground balls and causing three turnovers. Sidney Bush was awarded the loss through the first 55:58 of the game, making 12 saves.
 
Alyssa Wene led the Dutchmen with eight points on seven goals and an assist, while Erin Zieber won 16 draw controls with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Jamie Handwerger earned the win in the complete-game effort in net with six saves.
 
The Monarchs will be on the road for a two-game stretch starting with a MAC Freedom contest at Stevens on Wednesday, April 10 at 5:00 p.m.
