WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 18, 2024) -- The King's College women's soccer team tied a tough Rutgers-Newark team 2-2 Wednesday evening at McCarthy Stadium. The Monarchs move to 1-4-3 and the Scarlet Raiders notch a tie for the first time this season become 3-3-1. This was only the third-ever meeting between the two teams in program history.
King's took charge early on as junior midfielder
Maryanna Garcia delivered a perfect cross ball to first-year defender
Madison Jellema on the left side and lobbed it directly over fully-extended Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper Jillian Jones, resulting in Jellema's second goal of the season with 8:50 on the clock. Later, following a corner kick for the Scarlet Raiders, senior midfielder Leila Ettayebi was able to capitalize on a slight breakaway from the Monarch defenders and sneak it right past
Ashlyn Crawford's right side in minute 25. The game was tied 1-1 going into halftime.
Ettayebi tallied another goal for the Scarlet-Raiders with 57:39 on the clock, but first-year defender
Taryn Conover tied the game two minutes later with a goal off a free kick from about 30 yards out. This was also Conover's second goal of the season.
Junior defender
Abby Holloway was issued a yellow card in the 75
th minute and Rutgers-Newark's bench was issued one a minute later. Through an extremely competitive 90 minutes, both teams were charged with four fouls, posted six shots on goal and four saves for each respective goalie.
Ahead of tonight's contest, Rutgers-Newark's Ettayebi was second in the nation with nine goals and 19 points through six games. Two more goals tonight puts her at 11 goals through seven.
King's is back in action next Saturday, September 28 as they travel to Reading, PA to take on the Golden Wolves of Alvernia at 2 p.m.
