WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 10, 2025)—The King's College field hockey team opened MAC Freedom play against FDU-Florham on Friday night, falling 2-1 in a tightly contested matchup. With the result, the Monarchs fall to 1-11 on the year and 0-1 in MAC Freedom play while the Devils improve to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
FDU-Florham got on the board first midway through the opening period as Julianna Medina found the back of the cage at 8:55. King's answered with pressure late in the quarter, recording two shots on goal from
Rowan Murray and
Shaylee Heffron, but both were turned away by FDU goalkeeper Adrianna Goodwin to keep the Devils ahead 1-0 after the first.
The Devils doubled their lead in the second quarter when Medina converted a penalty stroke at 22:24 to make it 2-0.
The Monarchs responded just 90 seconds later as sophomore
Katey Shoemaker netted her first goal of the season off a penalty corner, finishing a setup from
Melanie Tlatenchi and Heffron on a corner at 23:54 to cut the deficit in half. King's entered the halftime break with a 3-2 edge in corners while trailing 4-3 in shots.
The Monarchs generated several quality looks in the second half, including a shot from
Reagan Joiner off a corner in the third quarter, but Goodwin again corralled the save for the Devils.
King's goalkeeper
Elizabeth Samuel kept her team in the game with five key saves, including stops on Medina and Mariana Lopez as FDU continued to apply pressure. Despite a strong defensive stand and consistent effort through the final minutes, the Monarchs were unable to find the equalizer.
FDU-Florham outshot King's 9-4 as the Monarchs held a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners. Samuel finished with five saves in 60 minutes of action, while Shoemaker, Heffron, Joiner, and Murray each recorded a shot on goal for the Monarchs. The goal for Shoemaker is her first of the season and the third of her career. Tlatenchi picked up her second assist of the season, while Heffron notched her first.
King's field hockey will return to action next Wednesday, October 15, when they travel to Misericordia University for another MAC Freedom matchup at 4:00 PM.
