Late Goal Pushes Union Past Men's Soccer

SCHENECTADY, NY (September 30, 2025)— The King's College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback on the road Tuesday night against Union College, as an own goal in the 87th minute proved to be the difference. The loss drops the Monarchs to 2-5-3 on the season, while the Garnet Chargers improve to 3-4-2 overall.

Union opened the scoring in the 14th minute as the Garnet Chargers capitalized on a headed cross to take an early 1-0 lead.

Th Monarchs generated some scoring opportunities in the first half with shots coming from Mark Atherton, William Zelaya and Nick Tighe. The Union keeper made saves on each of the Monarchs shots on goal as the Garnet Chargers took a 1-0 lead into the half.

King's goalkeeper Ben Van Valkenburg had a busy opening 45 minutes, collecting five saves as Union took eight shots with six on goal.

The Monarchs evened the score at 1-1 in the 55th minute as Philip Permyashkin slipped between several Union defenders. A well-placed pass from Jackson Nuttall set him up with a prime opportunity to slot the ball past the extended keeper, who had rushed out to challenge.

The second half saw limited attacking rhythm, though King's managed to create a few looks on goal through William Zelaya and Costantino Villano, both of which were saved. At the other end, Van Valkenburg handled Union's lone shot on target to keep the match level.

With the game seemingly headed for a draw, an unfortunate own goal in the 87th minute on a Union through ball broke the deadlock and ultimately decided the result in favor of the Garnet Chargers.

Permayshkin led the Monarchs offensively on Tuesday, scoring a goal on two shots while Nuttall picked up his first assist of the season. Van Valkenburg finished the night with six saves.

King's men's soccer returns home to McCarthy Stadium on Saturday, October 4 as the Monarchs open MAC Freedom play against Stevens Institute of Technology at 7:00 PM.
