MATCH 1: vs Hunter 1-3
The King's College men's volleyball team opened its home tri-match on Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought four-set match against Hunter College inside McGrane Gymnasium. The Monarchs dropped the opener to the Hawks by set scores of 20–25, 22–25, 25–21, and 26–28.
Hunter controlled the early momentum, taking the first two sets behind efficient attacking and strong serve reception. King's struggled to find rhythm offensively in the opening frame but remained within striking distance throughout the second set before the Hawks pulled away late to take a 2–0 lead in the match.
The Monarchs responded in the third set with their best stretch of the match, tightening defensively and finding success in transition. King's hit .342 in the set and outscored Hunter 25–21, cutting the match deficit to 2–1 and swinging momentum back in their favor.
Set four turned into a back-and-forth battle, featuring multiple lead changes and extended rallies. King's held set point late and pushed Hunter to extra points, but the Hawks closed out the frame 28–26 to secure the four-set victory.
Logan Place led the Monarchs offensively with 10 kills, while Alex Martellacci and Antonio Tavarez added 9 kills each. Greg Bousquet and Alex Schoch contributed 8 kills apiece, with Bousquet also collecting a team-high 17 digs. Brian Weaver finished with 24 assists and Brady Taylor chipped in 17 of his own.
As a team, King's totaled 49 kills and 14 team blocks, hitting .187 for the match while forcing long rallies and keeping pressure on Hunter throughout the afternoon. Despite the result, there were only eight points separating the two teams on the day.
MATCH 2: vs St. Joseph's Brooklyn 3-0
Men's Volleyball closed out its home tri-match in dominant fashion on Saturday evening, sweeping St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) in straight sets, 25–17, 25–21, 25–16, inside McGrane Gymnasium.
The Monarchs set the tone early in the opening set, using efficient attacking and aggressive serving to jump out to a quick lead. King's hit .320 in the first frame and never trailed, pulling away late behind strong performances from Logan Place and Greg Bousquet to secure the 25–17 win.
King's continued to control the pace in the second set, posting its best offensive output of the match. The Monarchs hit .375 in the frame and capitalized on St. Joseph's errors to build separation early. Brian Weaver distributed the offense effectively, while Antonio Tavarez and Alex Schoch provided consistent production at the net, helping King's cruise to a 25–16 advantage.
The third set proved to be the most competitive, with St. Joseph's staying within striking distance through the midpoint. However, King's responded with a decisive late run, fueled by kills from Logan Place and Alex Martelacci and strong defensive play in the back row. The Monarchs closed out the match with a .636 hitting percentage in the final set, finishing off the sweep with a 25–21 victory.
Logan Place led all players with 13 kills on .423 hitting, while Greg Bousquet added seven kills on a .357 clip. Alex Martellacci contributed seven kills and eight digs, and Aiden Glasgow anchored the defense with eight digs of his own from the libero position. Brian Weaver recorded 17 assists and Brady Taylor added 12 in the win, directing an offense that finished with 41 total kills and a .430 team hitting percentage.
As a team, King's totaled 10 team blocks and held St. Joseph's to just a .128 hitting percentage for the match, showcasing strong defensive discipline and consistent pressure throughout all three sets.
With the victory, the Monarchs closed the tri-match on a high note after splitting the day, bouncing back from the earlier match to earn a convincing sweep on their home floor. Next up for the men is a road match vs Elms College on Friday the 13th at 6:00 PM in Chicopee, Mass.
