WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 12, 2026) — The King's College field hockey team suffered a 4-1 setback to cross-town rival Wilkes at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs fall to 1-3 overall while the Colonels move to 2-3 on the season.
Wilkes opened the game with a quick shot that was saved by first-year goalkeeper
Tierney Hogan. Seconds later, the Colonels recorded another shot that went over the net. In the seventh minute of the match, the colonels were awarded a penalty corner, and right after the corner another shot was stopped by Hogan.
Wilkes kept up the pressure by recording two more shots near the ninth minute, but both were saved by Hogan. Later in the first quarter at 10:33, Hogan faced a Colonel attacker one-on-one and made a massive save to keep the game scoreless.
At the start of the second quarter, the Colonels scored their first goal of the game at 17:55. Seconds after the goal, the visitors tried to add to their lead but Hogan denied the attempt.
Near the middle of the 20th minute, Wilkes recorded another shot but
Shaylee Heffron posted a defensive save, the first of her career.
In the 21st minute, Hogan saved another one-on-one shot near the right side of the cage. Seconds later, Wilkes made another attempt that was stopped by
Allie Chocallo for King's second defensive save. Hogan added another save late in the minute to keep the Colonels off the scoreboard.
King's was awarded their first penalty corner of the game at 24:35.
Melanie Tlatenchi took the corner and made a pass to Heffron, who moved the ball to
Davina Krappa. Krappa then found
Gwen Erb, who quickly returned the ball to Tlatenchi for the finish, tying the game at 1-1. Erb recorded her second assist of the year while Tlatenchi scored her second goal of the season.
At 25:14, Wilkes was awarded a penalty corner. Shortly afterward, Heffron made her second defensive save of the day. After the defensive save, another shot was taken but Hogan made the stop.
At the start of the 28th minute, the colonels tried to take the lead at half, but Hogan recorded yet another save. The first-year goalkeeper made 10 saves at halftime.
Going into the third quarter, the Colonels regained the lead with a goal at 39:10. Wilkes continued to apply pressure, scoring again in the 41st minute before Hogan made another save moments later. At 44:36, Wilkes tried to increase their lead but Hogan posted a stop.
The Monarchs did not record another shot or goal during the fourth quarter. Wilkes would put up three shots on target between the 56th and 57th minutes, but Hogan saved all three attempts. Near the 59th minute of the game, Wilkes registered its final goal.
The final whistle blew, and the match ended 4-1. The Monarchs posted three defensive saves on the day while Hogan put up a season-high of 15 saves.
King's field hockey returns to action Tuesday, September 15, as they face off against the University of Scranton at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre, PA at 7:00 p.m.
