WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 1, 2026) -- The King's College women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback to Wilkes University in the Monarchs' home opener Tuesday evening at McCarthy Stadium. The contest was delayed prior to kickoff due to thunderstorms in the area before the two teams took the pitch.
 
Goalkeeper Courtney Monard was tested early by the Colonels, making three saves during the opening 45 minutes of action. Monard turned aside back-to-back shots in the 12th and 32nd minutes before denying a shot from the middle of the field moments later.
 
Wilkes continued to control the offensive pressure throughout the opening half, registering six shots and three corner kicks while keeping the Monarchs off the scoreboard. King's entered the halftime break still in search of its first shot of the evening as Monard kept the contest scoreless.
 
The Colonels maintained their attacking momentum following the intermission, but the Monarchs' defense continued to hold Wilkes at bay. King's recorded its first shot of the evening in the 60th minute when Isabella Pacia put a shot toward the middle of the net, but the Wilkes goalkeeper was there to make the save.
 
Wilkes finally broke through just moments later when a Colonel stepped up to take a free kick and laced a shot into the net at the 61:55 mark, giving the Colonels a 1-0 advantage.
 
King's continued to search for an equalizer as Mackenzie Seeley followed with another attempt in the 68th minute, but the Wilkes keeper once again kept the Monarchs off the scoreboard.
 
The Colonels continued to apply pressure late in the contest, earning five corner kicks during the final 11 minutes of regulation. Monard came up with her fifth and final save of the evening with just over 10 minutes remaining, keeping King's within one.
 
The Monarchs were unable to find the equalizer in the closing minutes as Wilkes held on for the 1-0 victory.
 
Wilkes finished the evening with a 12-2 advantage in shots and held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks. Monard registered five saves for the Monarchs, while the Colonels' goalkeeper made two saves in net. Pacia and Seeley accounted for King's two shots on goal.
 
The Monarchs return to the pitch on Friday, September 4, as they travel to Widener University for a 4:00 p.m. showdown with the Pride.
