KING'S MEN'S BASKETBALL DOWNS HOST SUSQUEHANNA IN OT FOR TOURNEY TITLE
SELINSGROVE -- The King's College men's basketball team placed four players in double-figures scoring as the Monarchs earned an 88-80 victory over host Susquehanna University in the championship game of the Weis Markets/Pepsi Tip-Off Tournament Saturday in Selinsgrove.
With the win, the Monarchs improved to 4-0 on the year while Susquehanna slipped to 3-1.
The teams entered overtime deadlocked at 72-72 but the Monarchs would immediately establish themselves when Kevin Conroy scored on a short jumper, followed by a three-pointer by Adam Brasky to give King's a 77-72 lead. After a three-pointer by Susquehanna cut the lead to two, the Monarchs worked the ball down low to Conroy, who was fouled and made both attempts to put King's ahead 79-75 with 2:32 left. After another Susquehanna basket, King's again found Conroy in the paint and again the Monarch sophomore was fouled in the act of shooting. Conroy would make both chances to push the King's lead to 83-77 with 1:01 remaining.
After a Susquehanna miss, King's Jim Schule was fouled and made both atempts to give the Monarchs a 85-77 with 0:45 on the clock. The Crusaders would again miss and Mike Wagner was fouled for King's, making both shots to increase the lead to 87-77 with 0:23 left in the extra session. In all, the Monarchs made good on 9-of-10 foul shots in the overtime period.
Conroy finished with 19 points with seven rebounds while Schule added 18 points and six rebounds. Wagner, who earned tournament most valuable player honors after totaling 33 points in two days, tallied 14 points and five rebounds in the contest. Harry Schlichter, who also earned a spot on the all-tournament team, netted 13 points with four rebounds. Chase McGowan contributed six points and five rebounds while Kyle Stackhouse distributed a team-high five assists with four rebounds.
Susquehanna was led by Spenser Spencer with 18 points while Matt McDevit and Joel Patch added 14 points each.
