MONARCH RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 67-65 LOSS TO FDU
MADISON, NJ--- With FDU-Florham leading by as many as nine points, King's made a run at the end of the second half to pull within two, but their rally would fall short and the Monarchs dropped their second Freedom Conference game by a 67-65 count Saturday in Madison, NJ. King's now stands at 4-3 and 0-2 in the conference while FDU improves to 2-4 and 1-1 in the league.
FDU started off strong when Ryan McPherson canned two three pointers to put the Devils up 6-0. The Monarchs got on the board after a layup by
Kevin Conroy. Despite King's best efforts, FDU was able to stay a step or two ahead. A free-throw shot by Conroy got King's to within two as the score stood at 17-15, but the Devils would go on a small run until the Monarchs were able to grab their first lead of the game at 4:49 on a three-point shot by
Nick Reisig. FDU was able to wrestle the lead back and take a 32-27 score into the lockerroom.
In the second half King's
Mike Wagner came out firing, knocking down a three to bring King's to within two. At 16:40, Conroy again grabbed the lead for the Monarchs 37-36 with a bucket down low. The Devils grabbed the lead again at 12:50 when McPherson again knocked down a three-pointer to move the score to 46-43. After the Devil's Martin Johnson scored a layup, FDU had its biggest lead of the game at nine.
The Monarchs fought back and went up 65-64 with 1:41 left in the game, but FDU countered when George Twill made good on a layup with just 0:23 seconds left to give FDU a 66-65 lead. After a King's miss, Isai Reyes was fouled and made one-of- two shots to push the score to 67-65 with 0:04 left. The Monarchs had a chance to tie the score when Conroy was fouled with 0:02 left and went to the line for a one-and-one. Conroy, however, would miss the first shot and time expired before the Monarchs could get another shot.
For King's, two players enjoyed double digits in scoring, with Chase McGowan and Conroy both putting up 22 points.
Jim Schule lead the Monarchs in rebounds with seven, as well as three blocks and one steal. As a team, King's shot 37.3 (25-67) percent from the floor and both teams grabbed 40 total rebounds.
