Monarchs Defeat DeSales In Critical Conference Game

KING'S MEN POST IMPORTANT 74-66 WIN OVER DESALES TO HAND BULLDOGS FIRST CONFERENCE LOSS

WILKES-BARRE -- John Soboleski scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds to power the King's College men's basketball team to an important 74-66 Freedom Conference victory over DeSales University Wednesday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's improved to 12-8 overall and 5-3 in Freedom Conference games. DeSales, meanwhile, suffered its first loss in league play, falling to 17-3 and 7-1.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as Soboleski's 13 points enable King's to take a 30-23 lead at the break. DeSales would come out in the second half and used a quick 11-2 run to capture a 34-32 lead on a three-pointer by Ed Lapinski with 17:24 remaining.

Lapinski would later give the Bulldogs a 41-36 lead when he made a bucket down low with 13:54 left in the contest. The Monarchs would then put together a 9-2 surge and used a three-pointer from Kofi Dwebeng to recapture the lead at 45-43 with 9:53 on the clock. King's would then extend the advantage to 54-49 on a three-pointer by Jim Schule with 7:20 remaining.

Soboleski would score six of the Monarchs next 10 points as the King's lead grew to 64-50 after another three-pointer from Dwebeng with 3:34 left. The Bulldogs would attempt to make a late charge and cut the lead to 69-63 on a lay-up by Eddie Ohlson with 1:02 on the clock but the Monarchs made three-of-four foul shots and Jim Schule score on a two-on-one break to seal the victory.

Soboleski was 7-of-14 from the field and made 6-of-8 from the foul line while also adding four blocked shots. Cousart followed with 16 points, six rebounds, and four steals while Schule netted 13 points and five boards. Dwebeng chipped in with nine points.

Lapinski led DeSales with 17 points and nine rebounds while Darnell Braswell tallied 16 points and six boards. Eric Salem netted 11 points while Ohlson finished with 10.
