KING'S SOFTBALL SWEPT BY DESALES
WILKES-BARRE -- Playing just its fifth and six games in the past month due to the weather, the King's College softball team showed its rust as the Lady Monarchs dropped both ends of their Freedom Conference opening doubleheader to visiting DeSales University Saturday at Betzler Fields.
DeSales won the first game 10-5 before taking the nightcap 5-1. With the sweep, King's fell to 9-5 overall and 0-2 in league play. DeSales, meanwhile, improved to 13-5 and 5-1 in Freedom games.
In the opener, King's was victimized by the bat of light-hitting Jamie Pfitzenmayer who entered the day with a scant .213 (10-47) batting average. The Bulldog junior stepped up her game, however, by going 3-for-4 with six RBI, including critical three-run home runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
Kinng's managed 12 hits in the game but stranded eight runners.
Abbey Knoblauch was 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the first inning.
Leanne Harvey went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lindsey Horner was 2-for-3 with an RBI while
Meaghan Galvin was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Kelsey Shreaves was the losing pitcher for King's, allowing 10 runs, eight which were earned, on 14 hits while striking out two batters.
In the second game, DeSales broke open a scoreless game with two rujns in the third inning before adding two more in the sixth and one in the seventh. Pfitzenmayer was 2-for-2 and scored two runs for the Bulldogs and finished her career day by going 5-for-6 with two home runs, six RBI, and scored four runs.
King's would score its lone run of the game in the seventh when
Lauren DeCreny doubles and later scored from third on an infield grounder by
Becky Loring.
The Lady Monarchs managed seven hits in the game, led by Knoblauch who was 3-for-3. DeCreny was 2-for-3 while Christy Parfitt and
Katie Fry added singles for King's.
Hoerner was the losing pitcher, allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits while striking out six batters.
King's will host Manhattanville Tuesday in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Betzler Fields
