KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS MANHATTANVILLE
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team posted an important doubleheader sweep of visiting Manhattanville College Tuesday at Betzler Fields.
The Lady Monarchs won the first game 5-3 before taking the nightcap 10-1 in five innings. With the sweep, King's improved to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in Freedom Conference play.
In the opener, King's reached the scoreboard first when Annie Drimones reached base on a fielder's choice and stole second base. After walks to
Leanne Harvey and Lindsey Hoerner loaded the bases,
Becky Loring delivered a two-run single.
Kelsey Shreaves would follow with an RBI single to give the Lady Monarchs a 3-0 lead.
After the Valiants scored two runs in the second inning, King's answered with a run in the third when Meghan Galvin singled, stole second, and eventually scored on an error to give the Lady Monarchs a 4-2 lead.
After the Valiants cut the lead to 4-3 with a run in the fourth, the Lady Monarchs scored in their half of the inning when Harvey singled and scored on a double from Hoerner.
Shreaves (5-3) earned the pitching win, scattering 10 hits over seven innings and striking out six batters.
In the second game, King's fell behind 1-0 in the first but responded with five runs in the second inning, keyed by a run-scoring single from Drimones and a two-run double from Galvin.
The Lady Monarchs added five more runs in the fourth on the strength of a two-run single from Galvin, an infield RBI by Harvey, and a towering two-run home run by Hoerner over the left field fence that pushed the score to 10-1.
Galvin was 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI while Drimones was 2-for-2 with a run and RBI. Loring also went 2-for-2. Hoerner (6-2 was the winning pitcher, allowing seven hits with two strikeouts.
King's will next travel to Madison, NJ to face FDU-Florham Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
