(Sophomore Nealer Sets New School Record)
WILKES-BARRE --- Sophomore distance swimmer
Maggie Nealer started the meet off right when in just the third event of the night, she broke the school record in the 1,000 yard freestyle in a time of 11:58 to help the Monarchs to split results, falling 73-47 to Lycoming College and nudging by FDU-Florham 62-60. The previous record, held by current student coach Christy Rossowski, was 12:01.00 in 2007.
With the split decision, King's now stands at 6-6 overall and 1-4 in the MAC while Lycoming improves to 5-2 and 4-2 after also defeating FDU 74-46. The Devils of Florham are now 2-8-1 and 1-5-1 in the league.
Nealer was also able to grab a second place finish in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:54.69 and a third place finish in the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 1:02.30. Fellow sophomore Becca Smith was able to come in just behind Nealer in the 500 yard freestyle in a time of 5:56.54 for third. Picking up more points in the third place spot, Smith finished the 50 yard freestyle in 28.64 as well.
Other top finishes for the Monarchs were freshman
Amanda Casey, who took third in the 100 yard back stroke in a time of 1:07.73 and the 200 yard back stroke, touching in 2:30.69. Sophomore
Sara Schmader came in second in the 200 yard butterfly, getting to the wall in 2:41.73 and grabbed another second place finish in the 400 yard IM in a time of 5:35.30. Freshman
Caitlin Casey was the first to touch in the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 1:07.71.
In the final women's event of the night, the Monarch 200 yard freestyle relay team of
Amanda Casey,
Caitlin Casey, Smith and Nealer finished first, winning by over 16 seconds, in a time of 1:51.36.
King's swimming is back in action this weekend when they travel to Glenside, PA to finish their regular season conference schedule against Arcadia University. Meet time is set for 1:00 p.m.
