Monarch Men Rally Falls Short Against Manhattanville, 62-53

MONARCH MEN'S BASKETBALL COMEBCK BID FALLS SHORT IN 62-53 LOSS TO MANHATTANVILLE
 
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College men's basketball team dug itself into a first half hole and made an outstanding effort to battle back, but the Monarchs eventually fell to visiting Manhattanville College 62-53 in a Freedom Conference matchup Saturday in Scandlon Gym.

With the loss, King's fell to 8-7 overall and1-6 in Freedom Conference play. Manhattanville improved to 9-6 and 5-2 with the victory.

The teams played evenly through much of the first half and were deadlocked at 11-11 with 10:21 on the clock. Manhattanville would score seven of the next nine points to build a 18-11 lead with 6:10 remaining after a short jumper from Wesley Wicks. The Monarchs used a bucket from Kyle Stackhouse and one-of-two foul shots by Kevin Conroy to cut the lead to 18-14 with 5:03 left.
 
The teams traded baskets as the Monarchs remained close, trailing 20-16 with 3:25 to play. The Valiants, however, took command during the rest of the half, enjoying a 10-2 run to take a 30-18 lead into the break.

The Monarchs began to turn the tide in at the start of the second half with a 14-2 run, drawing to within 33-32 with 14:32 remaining. King's, however, was never able take over the lead, drawing to within one point on two more occasions as Manhattanville fended off the rally. A three-pointer from King's freshman Nick Reisig cut the lead to 47-45 with 6:54 remaining but the Monarchs were unable to come closer.

The Valiants answered Reisig's shot with a 14-2 run to build a 61-47 lead with 2:02 on the clock. King's drew no closer than nine points the rest of the way as Manhattanville walked away with the victory.

Manhattanville owned a 43-to-25 advantage in total rebounds, including 17 on the offensive glass. The Monarchs also failed to advantage of their free throws, making just 7-of-15 for the day.

Conroy led King's with 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists while Wil Acevedo and Harry Schlichter came off the bench to score eight points each. Jim Schule added seven points with five boards. 

Wicks topped Manhattanville with 18 points while Glen Rodriguez netted 15 points.

King's returns to action Wednesday when the Monarchs travel to Center Valley to face DeSales University at 8:00 p.m.
