KING'S CAGERS PLACES SIX IN DOUBLE-FIGUES CORING IN 108-65 VICTORY OVER PENN COLLEGE
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College men's basketball team placed six players in double-figure scoring and produced its biggest offensive output of the year as the Monarchs posted a 108-65 victory over visiting Penn College of Technology Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 9-10 on the year while Penn College slipped to 10-7.
The Wildcats came out the gates on fire from the perimeter, hitting on three consecutive three-pointers by Craig Flint, Greg Solyak, and Joe Simon to build a quick 9-2 lead on just four possessions. After the Monarchs cut the lead to 9-5, Penn College used one-of-two foul shots by Solyak and a lay-up from Tom Little to build a 12-5 advantage with 16:13 left in the half.
King's would remain patient and chipped into the Wildcat lead, eventually tying the score at 22-22 on a bucket and foul shot from Kevin Conroy with 12:09 remaining.
With King's holding a 31-30 lead with 8:40 on the clock, the Monarchs began to pull away thanks to five points from Adam Brasky, a three-pointer by Nick Reisig, and a short jumper from Jim Schule to push the score to 38-30 with 6:00 to play in the half.
After a Wildcat basket cut the lead to 38-32, King's put together a 11-2 spurt, keyed by another Reisig trey, four straight points from Harry Schlichter, and another three-pointer by Mike Wagner to build a 49-34 lead at the 3:52 mark. Following a Penn College three-pointer by Leroy Joiner that cut the lead to 49-37, the Monarchs closed out the half with a 7-4 spurt to take a 56-41 lead into the break.
It was more of the same in the second half as a three-pointer from Reisig, an inside bucket by Schule, and a short jumper from Kyle Stackhouse gave the Monarchs a 22-point lead, at 63-41 with 17:43 left in the contest. The lead continued to grow as the Monarchs took a 41-point lead when a Schule lay-up with 11:36 to play gave King's an 85-44 advantage. In all, King's outscore Penn College 29-3 over the first 8:34 of the second half.
From that point forward, King's coach J.P. Andrejko began to empty his bench. The Monarch reserves were able to maintain the lead as the Wildcats drew no closer than 35 points the rest of the way.
All 12 players on the King's roster reached the scoring column. Schlichter led the Monarchs with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 11 rebounds. Wagner followed with 17 points off of five three-pointers while Schule netted 16 points with five rebounds. Conroy tallied 11 points and nine boards in just 22 minutes of play while Reisig tallied 11 points with three three-pointers. Brasky contributed 10 points with five assists and five steals. Bill Joyce registered nine points while Tim Sanderson chipped in with two points, five rebounds, and four assists off the bench. The Monarchs finished the game shooting 55.6 (40-72) percent from the field.
Penn College was led by Flint and Mike Knepp with 13 points each while Solyak added 11 points. The Wildcats were 7-of-12 from three-point range in the first half but cooled off to just 2-of-12 over the final 20 minutes of play.
