KING'S MEN POST 76-52 VICTORY OVER CENTENARY
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College men's basketball team used a late first-half surge to build a 39-24 lead and never let up in the second half as the Monarchs posted a 76-52 victory over visiting Centenary College Wednesday evening in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, the Monarchs improved to 7-5 with their third straight victory while Centenary slipped to 5-5.
The teams played on even terms for much of the first half as the Monarchs held a 23-20 lead at 8:11 following a three-pointer by Nick Reisig. After Centenary cut the lead to 23-22 on a Ryan Kearny Bucket with 7:51 on the clock, the Monarchs closed out the half with 16-2 run , thanks in large part to 10 points from Jim Schule, and a traditional three-point play by Kyle Stackhouse during the surge.
In the second half, King's would stretch the lead to 17 points after a bucket down low by Kevin Conroy stretched the lead to 41-24. Centenary, however, answered with a 8-2 run to cut the Monarch lead to 43-32 following a three-pointer from Will Atkinson.
King's quickly countered with a 11-2 onslaught and took a 54-34 lead on a lay-up by Schule and a traditional three-point play from Mike Wagner at the 11:49 mark. The Monarchs continued to pour it on and built a 24-point advantage with 4:16 left following five straight points form Chase McGowan and an acrobatic reverse lay-up from Reisig.
After Monarch coach J.P. Andrejko cleared the bench, King's reached its biggest lead of the game at 26 points when Tim Sanderson scored on a lay-up with 1:48 remaining to push the score to 75-49.
King's played a solid game defensively, holding the Cyclones well below their 81.3 points per-game average. The Monarch inside trio of Conroy, McGowan, and Harry Schlichter also did an admirable job on Centenary's leading scorer Andrew Baker who entered the game averaging 20.1 points per-game. Baker was held scoreless until 6:40 remained in the game and finished with just four points.
Schule led King's with 15 points, three rebounds, and three assists while Conroy followed with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Wagner tallied 12 points while McGowan netted nine. Schlichter also came through with a solid eight-point, nine-rebound effort off the bench.
Centenary was paced by Rob Urie with 13 points while Ryan Kearney and Will Atkinson contributed 12 and 11 points respectively. Baker chipped in with 11 rebounds.
King's returns to action Saturday when the Monarchs host Delaware Valley at 3:00 p.m.
