MONARCH MEN FALL TO DEL-VALLEY, 81-80

DOYLESTOWN -- James Jones scored 33 points and the host Delaware Valley College men's basketball team held off an improbably last-minute comeback attempt to post a 81-80 victory over King's College Saturday in Doylestown.

With the loss, King's falls to 11-12 overall and 3-11 in Freedom Conference play while Delaware Valley improved to 11-11 and 7-7.

King's trailed 6-5 early in the game when a Jim Schule bucket ignited a 13-2  Monarch run. Three points from Harry Schlichter and a basket down low from Kevin Conroy would give the Monarchs a 18-8 advantage with 11:41 left in the half.

Delaware Valley, however, would answer with a 18-7 run and took a 26-25 lead with 5:34 remainingin the opening stanza. The Monarchs took leads of 27-26 and 29-28 with 3:12 on the clock, but the Aggies closed out the half with a 12-5 run following a three-pointer by Zach Wise at the 0:24 mark and a steal and lay-up from Jones with one tick left on the clock to give Delaware Valley a 40-34 lead at the break.

In the second half the Aggies stretched the lead to 54-42 on a pair of foul shots from Tom Signore. King's battled back and came to within 69-66 after an inside bucket by Nick Reisig with 2:14 to play.

The Aggies extended the lead to 74-68 after Jones canned a pair of foul shots with 0:51 on the clock. The Aggies later built a 78-70 lead after Jason Goldheimer connected on two more foul shots with 0:28 remaining.

After Kyle Stackhouse made two foul shots to bring the Monarchs back to within 78-72 with 0:22 left, Goldheimer added two more free throws of his own to extend the Aggie lead to 80-72 with 0:17 to go in the contest.

The Monarchs, however, would not go away quietly.

From there, Stackhouse made good on a long three-pointer with 0:14 on the clock to cut the lead to 80-75. After a Monarch steal, Conroy scored inside to whittle the Delaware Valley advantage to 80-77 with 0:07 left.

With King's fouling immediately, Jason Seipt made one-of-two foul shots for a 81-77 Aggie lead with 0:05 on the clock. The Monarchs, however, continued to fight back as Stackhouse would drill another long three-pointer to bring King's within 81-80 with 0:03 to play.

Needing a quick steal or a foul, the Monarchs were unable to get either as the Aggies managed to inbound the ball and run out the clock.

Conroy led King's with 20 points, four rebounds, and eight assists. Stackhouse finished with 16 points, five rebounds, and six assists while Schule also added 16 points and five boards. Schlichter tallied 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench while Reisig and Mike Wagner chipped in with nine and eight points respectively.

Jones paced the Aggies by hitting 11-of-18 shots from the field, including 3-of-7 from three-point range and 8-of-8 from the foul line. Goldheimer added 22 points with six three-pointers.

The Aggies made good on 12-of-28 shots from long-range, compared to 4-of-10 for the Monarchs.  Delaware Valley also made 21-of-24 from the foul line while King's was just 14-of-23 from the charity stripe.

King's returns to action Tuesday when the Monarchs travel to Purchase, NY to face Manhattanville College at 8:00 p.m.
