KING'S SOFTBALL SWEPT BY DESALES
CENTER VALLEY – The defending Freedom Conference DeSales University softball team posted a doubleheader sweep over visiting King's College Saturday in Center Valley.
DeSales won the first game 6-0 before taking the nightcap 3-1. With the sweep DeSales improved to 14-6 overall and 5-3 in league play while the Lady Monarchs slipped to 10-8 and 3-3.
In the first game DeSales took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jamie Pfitzenmayer singled and eventually scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Jen Lococo
In the third, the Bulldogs upped the lead when Kerry Andrews singled and scored on a double by Lococo. Kate Steiner then singled home Lococo to give DeSales a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth inning Andrews led off with a double before Amanda Kensecki followed with a RBI double. Kate Steiner added a RBI single to up the Bulldog lead to 5-0, and then later scored from third on an infield out to push the score to 6-0.
King's managed just two hits in the game, singles by Lauren DeCreny and Christie Parfitt. DeSales pitcher struck out seven batters while walking just one hitter. Kensecki, Andrews and Steiner had two hits each for DeSales. Lindsey Hoerner took the loss for King's, allowing six earned runs on eight hits while striking out three batters.
In the second game, DeSales took a 2-0 first inning lead on an RBI single by Steiner and a run scoring double from Kelly Moran. The Bulldogs added a run in the fifth when Pfitzenmayer doubled and scored from third on an infield out.
King's scored its lone run in the seventh when Becky Loring walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on a single by Meghan Galvin. DeCreny then singled home Loring to cut the lead to 3-1. The Lady Monarchs, however, were unable to score again as DeSales held on for the victory. King's outhit DeSales 8-4 in the game but were not able to take advantage of scoring opportunities.
Galvin led King's with three hits in the game. Shawna Walp pitched well in taking the loss for King's, allowing three runs, one earned, while allowing just four hits and striking out two batters.
King's travels to Purchase, NY on Monday to face Manhattanville College in a Freedom Conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
