KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH WILKES
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team split a doubleheader with Wilkes University at Betzler Athletic Complex on Tuesday. King's won the first game by the score of 8-0 in five innings while Wilkes captured the second game 11-9.
With the split, King's stands at 12-12 and 5-7 in Freedom Conference play, while Wilkes is now 13-13 and 7-5 in league play.
In the first game, King's hurler Lindsey Horner pitched a complete game going five innings and striking out five.
Gretchen Tholen led the game off in the first inning with a single to left center field,
Becky Loring brought Tholen home with a double to right center field giving the Lady Monarchs the early 1-0 lead. Loring advanced to third and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0.
King's would score again in the top of the third inning with
Abbey Knoblauch hitting a double down the left field line.
Meaghan Galvin and Tholen drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Loring, who then reached base on an error by the second-baseman to score the run. Christy Parfitt walked to set up
Samantha Hornberger who singled though the left side to push the score to 4-0.
Lauren DeCreny flied out to right field and
Katie Fry singled to left to make the score 8-0.
Leading the way offensively for King's was Loring who was 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI while scoring two runs. Hornberger was 1-for-2 in the first game with two RBI while DeCreny was 1-for1 with one RBI. Leading the way for Wilkes was Erin Plank who had the lone hit in the game.
In the second game between the two teams
Shawna Walp took the mound for 4.1 innings giving up nine hits and 11 runs. Wilkes started the first inning off quickly when four singles by Sarah Miller, Amanda Holston, Sarah Elliott and Colleen Labor pushed in six runs. Kristy Ordile hit a home run to right field to drive in two runs to make the score 8-0.
King's got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when DeCreny singled to left field. Wilkes scored again in the top of the third inning when Ordile singled to center field driving home Elliot and Miller.
The Lady Monarchs would strike again in the bottom of the fourth as DeCreny led the inning off with a double to right field and advanted to third on an error by the right fielder. Jackie O'Brien then singled to center field to drive home the run to make the score 10-3.
Rachel Zinni then doubled to right field to drive home O'Brien. Galvin then hit a home run to left field driving home three runs to make the score 10-6.
The Lady Colonels would not back down though, driving in a run in the top of the fifth inning when Ordile singled in Finnerty to make the score 11-6. King's would attempt to rally in the bottom of the seventh with O'Brien starting off the inning with a single to right field. Zinni then walked to set the stage for Hoerner who hit a three-run home run to center field to make the score 11-9. Knoblauch would double to left but was stranded on base to end the game for King's.
Leading the way for King's in the nightcap was Galvin who was 2-for-5 with one double, one HR and three RBI while scoring one run. Hoerner was 1-for-2 with one HR and three RBI. Knoblauch was 2-for-4 with one double. For Wilkes Ordile was 3-for-4 with one HR and five RBI. Colleen Labor was 2-for-4 and two RBI.
King's will be idle until Friday when the Lady Monarchs host SUNY Oneonta in a 3:00 pm doubleheader at Betzler Fields.
