KING'S BASEBALL TEAM OUTSLUGS MORAVIAN, 14-8
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College baseball team exploded for 16 hits and a 12-2 lead over the first three innings of play as the King's College baseball team outslugged visiting Moravian College 14-8 in a non-conference match Tuesday at Lipo Field.
With the win, King's improved to 19-14 overall while Moravian slipped to 17-16.
King's opened up a 2-0 first inning lead when Mike Fignar doubled and later scored on another double by Jon Venarchick. Jim Troianiello then delivered an RBI single to add the second run of the inning. After Moravian scored in the second, the Monarchs responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Feci singled and Phil Moskowitz reached base on an error. Eric Matula followed with a RBI to centerfield before Venarchick stroked a two-run triple to left center. Matt Unger then added an RBI single to push the lead to 6-1.
Moravian added another run in the top of the third inning, but the Monarchs cashed in on a big six-run at-bat during the bottom half of the third . Gracjan Kraszewski smacked a one-out solo home run to left field to push the lead to 7-2 lead. After Phil Moskowitz and Feci single, Matula contributed with an RBI single. Venarchick followed with a RBI single of his own to up the Monarch lead to 9-2. After a base hit by Unger loaded the bases, Troianiello poked a two-run single up the middle to give King's a 11-2 advantage. Rob Fravel added the final run of the inning when his base hit brought home Unger.
The Greyhounds scored a run in the fourth, then added five in the fifth to cut the lead to 12-8, but King's scored one run in the bottom of the sixth and added another in the seventh to gain the victory.
Venarchick led King's with an outstanding day, going 4-for-4 with five runs, three RBI, two triples, and a double. Troianiello was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Moskowitz finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Unger was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Fravel went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Matula was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI while Feci chipped in by going 2-for-5 with two runs. King's amassed 19 hits in the game with 13 RBI.
Peter Fanning picked up his first win of the season by pitching one inning of relief of Venarchick, who started for King's and tossed four complete innings.
King's returns to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. contest against Susquehanna University.
