KING'S SOFTBALL CLINCHES FREEDOM CONFERENCE PLAYOFF BERTH WITH SWEEP OF FDU

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College softball team clinched a berth in next week's Freedom Conference Tournament with a sweep of visiting FDU-Florham Saturday at Betzler Fields.  King's won the first game 5-0 before capturing the nightcap 8-0 in five innings.

With the sweep, King's improved to 20-12 and 9-7 in Freedom Conference games while FDU slipped to 16-16 overall and 4-12 in league games.

King's will open the post-season on Tuesday when the Lady Monarchs travel to face cross-town rival Wilkes at 4:00 p.m.

In the opener versus FDU, King's took a 1-0 first inning lead when Abbey Knoblauch singled and later scored from third on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Lindsey Hoerner.  The lady Monarchs added three more runs in the second inning when Katie Fry doubled and scored on a throwing error following a Knoblauch single. Meaghan Galvin then stroked an RBI triple before Becky Loring drove in Galvin with a base hit.  King's scored its final run in the sixth inning when Knoblauch doubled and scored on a single by Loring.

Knoblauch was 3-for-4 with three runs while Loring went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Katie Fry contributed by going 2-for-3 with a run while Galvin finished 2-for-4 with one run and a RBI. Hoerner was the winning pitcher, allowing just five hits while striking out seven batters.

In the second game, the Lady Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Loring singled and scored on a base hit by Hoerner.  King's opened the game up with a five-run third inning, keyed by a two-run triple from Christie Parfitt, a two-run single by Loring, and a RBI double off the bat of Hoerner to give the Lady Monarchs a 6-0 lead.  King's would ended the game in the fifth inning when Loring doubled and moved to third on a single by Tholen. Pariftt followed up with a double as both runners scored to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule.

Loring was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI while Hoerner went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Parfitt was 2-for-3 with three RBI while Galvin contributed two hits and Sue Roccia aided the cause by going 1-for-2 with a run scored.  Hoerner won her second shutout of the day, allowing five hits in five innings while striking out five batters.
