KING'S SOFTBALL TEAM TRAVELS TO WILKES FOR OPENING ROUND OF FREEDOM CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
 
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College and Wilkes University softball teams will resume their long-standing local rivalry on Tuesday with the stakes far larger than a regular-season matchup.  One rival will end the other's season as the teams square off in the opening round of the Freedom Conference Championships at 4:00 p.m. at Wilkes' Softball Field at the Ralston Complex.
 
Ticket prices will sold at the field and are listed at $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors, and $2.00 for students, while children under age-six will be admitted free.

King's finished in fifth place in the Freedom Conference regular-season standings after posting a 20-12 overall record and a 9-7 conference mark.  Fourth-seeded Wilkes is 18-20 overall and 10-6 in league play. The teams split the regular-season series in a doubleheader played at King's two weeks ago.  King's won the first game 8-0 in five innings before Wilkes captured the second contest 11-9.
 
King's paced by junior shortstop Meaghan Galvin who is batting .438 (42-96) with two home runs, 12 doubles, two triples, and 22 RBI. Senior second-baseman Abbey Knoblauch follows at .426 (43-101) with 13 doubles, one triple, and 14 RBI.  Senior outfielder Becky Loring hits .422 (35-83)  with two home runs, two doubles, two triples, and 25 RBI. Junior catcher Christie Parfitt stands at .379 (22-58) with seven doubles, one home run, and 17 RBI. Sophomore outfielder Lauren DeCreny contributes with a . 330 (31-94) average with seven doubles and 20 RBI. Sophomore third-baseman Gretchen Tholen hits .311 (28-90) with three home runs, five doubles, and 17 RBI.
 
In the circle, junior Lindsey Hoerner is 13-6 with a 1.89 ERA and 84 strikeouts in107 and two-thirds innings. She also aides her own cause by batting .315 (17-54) with three home runs, five doubles, and 16 RBI.  Freshman Shawna Walp is 4-6 with a 4.60 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 62 and one-third innings.
Wilkes is led by junior  shortstop Gina Stefanelli who is batting .434 (53-122) with seven home runs, 12 doubles, and 37 RBI. Sophomore infielder  Kristy Ordile follows with a .388 (31-80) average with two home runs, two doubles, and 19 RBI.  Senior third-baseman MeLisa Bracone stands at .331 (40-121) with two home runs, 11 doubles, and 16 RBI.  For the pitchers sophomore Lindsey Behrenhauser is 14-5 with a 2.49 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 126 and two-thirds innings. Senior Maureen Pelot is 3-7 with a 4.06 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 77 and two-thirds innings.
 
The winner of the King's-Wilkes will advance to Freedom Conference Championships Friday and Saturday at Wilkes.  The event will be a four-team, double-elimination tournament as the King's-Wilkes winner meets top-seeded Misericordia at 11:00 a.m. while second-seeded defending champion DeSales plays third-seeded Delaware Valley at 1:00 p.m.
