KING'S FOOTBALL FALLS TO ALBRIGHT, 38-14
Game Box Score
READING – Sophomore tailback Ty Hughes rushed for 158 yards with three touchdowns and host Albright College broke open a 7-7 game with 21 second quarter points as the Lions registered a 38-14 victory over visiting King's College Saturday at James Shirk Stadium in Reading.
With the win, Albright improved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Middle Atlantic Conference while the Monarchs fell to 0-6 and 0-3 in conference play.
Albright opened the scoring on the second possession of the game when Adam Galczynski ignited the drive with a 33-yard pass to Luke Wallace to the Monarch 33. Hughes added a 12-yard run to the King's 22 and Galczynski hit Scott Pillar for four yards to the 13. An eight yard run by Hughes would then give the Lions a first-and-goal at the Monarch one. On the next play Hughes burst into the end zone to get Albright on the scoreboard. John Whelan added the extra-point kick as the Lions took a 7-0 lead with 8:27 remaining in the first quarter.
King's immediately responded when sophomore tailback Eric Ofcharsky started the drive off with a 17-yard run. A 13-yard pass from Corey Lavin to Glenn Ford moved the ball to the Albright 45. Two plays later the duo hooked up again for a 13 more yards to the Albright 32. Ofcharsky then broke free on a draw play for 15 yards to the Lion 17. Two plays later, a seven-yard run by Ofcharsky set up a third-and-two play from the 10. On the next play Lavin found Ofcharsky on a swing play and the Monarch sophomore raced untouched into the end zone.
On the ensuing kickoff King's caught a break when Albright's Joe Amenth fumbled and Tyson Kelly recovered for the Monarchs at the Lion 21. King's was unable to move the ball, but rather than attempt a 36-yard field goal into a stiff wind, King's attempted to gain a first down. Lavin, however, was flushed from the pocket and forced to throw the ball out of bounds as the Monarchs were unable to capitalize on the turnover.
On Albright's first play following the possession change, Galczynski hit Pillar for a 49-yard gain to the King's 30. The drive stalled, though and Whelan's 46-yard field goal was wide left as the game remained tied.
Following a King's punt, Albright took over at the Monarch 45-yard line. A four-yard pass to Luke Wallace was followed by a 21-yard run by Hughes to the King's 20. Andrew Castano then hauled in an 11-yard pass from Ben Schaffle to the King's nine. Two plays later the Monarchs were flagged for pass interference, giving Albright a first-and-goal at the King's two. Two plays later Hughes scored from one-yard out and Whelan added the point-after as Albright took a 14-7 lead with 11:14 remaining in the second quarter.
After another King's punt, Albright again threatened when Hughes broke off a 29-yard run to the King's 39. After two short carries gave the Lions a third-and-eight from the King's 36, Hughes picked up a key first down with a nine-yard run to the Monarch 27. Two plays later Galczynski found Wallace for 24 yards to the King's two. On the next play, Hughes burst over the goal line for his third rushing touchdown of the game. Whelan's conversion gave the Lions a 21-7 lead with 5:15 left in the first half
The Monarchs looked to respond by moving the ball 27 yards to its own 48. But the drive stalled and, facing a fourth-and-five, King's attempted a fake punt with a short snap to up-man Edwyn Edwards. The play was unsuccessful as Edwards was stopped a yard short of the first down as Albright took over at its own 49-yard line with 3:43 left in the half.
The gamble would prove costly as the Lions took advantage. On first down, Galczynski found Pillar all alone down the middle and the Lion receiver broke a tackle at the two-yard line and fought his way into the end zone for a Lion score. Whelan's kick was good as Albright took a 28-7 advantage with 3:32 on a clock, a lead the Lions would take into the halftime break.
On the first possession of the second half the Monarchs moved the ball all the way to the Albright 32. But on a second down play Lavin appeared to connect with Jay Torres. Lion cornerback Mike Rice, however, would pry the ball away and rumbled 51 yards to the Monarch 19. Two plays later Galczynski found Sean Caldwell for an Albright score. The point-after gave the Lions a 35-7 lead with 12:13 left in the third quarter.
Albright would later extend the lead to 38-7 on a 40-yard field goal to push the lead to 38-7 lead with 6:38 left in the third quarter.
King's added the final score of the contest when the Monarchs drove 58 yards on 10 plays, capped by a one-yard quarterback sneak from Lavin with 14:55 left in the fourth quarter.
Statistically, Albright owned a 477-to320 advantage in total yards as well as a 21-17 edge in first downs. The Lions amassed 226 yards on 37 carries while King's totaled 168 yards on 32 attempts.
Hughes' rushing total came on 27 carries for a 5.7 yards per-carry average. Galczynski completed 11-of-21 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns. Pillar caught five passes for 134 yards and one score while Wallace added four receptions for 69 yards.
For King's, Ofcharsky rushed for 122 yards on 19 carries and caught five passes for 22 yards. Lavin completed 19-of-40 passes for 152 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Ford posted four receptions for 44 yards while Torres added four catches for 31 yards.
Mike Briggs topped the Monarch defense with 10 tackles while Ryan Kelly followed with nine stops while Andrew Yablonsky and Nick Beinke chipped in with eight tackles each.
King's will return to action on Saturday when the Monarchs host Lebanon Valley College at 1:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
