KING'S MEN'S BASKETBALL DROPS HOME DEBUT AGAINST ALBRIGHT 57-48 AS CONROY NETS 1,000TH POINT
WILKES-BARRE – Zac Shaeffer scored a game-high 18 points and added eight assists and King's College went cold from the floor shooting only 15.4 percent (4-26) in the second half as visiting Albright College posted a 57-48 win over the Monarchs in non-conference action Tuesday night.
The loss overshadowed a solid performance from senior forward Kevin Conroy (Chatham, NJ, Chatam), who netted his 1,000th point late in the second frame.
With the loss King's slips to 2-1 on the year, while Albright improves their overall mark to 2-1.
King's jumped out to an early 7-4 lead to start the game as Conroy flexed his muscle down low scoring three of the Monarchs first four buckets. Albright took their first lead of the game at the 13:38 mark when Kyle Jordan broke free from the King's defense and scored in transition. The Lions extended their lead to 20-11, the largest of the first frame, as Shaeffer hit a jumper followed by two quick scores off the fast break.
From there, King's went back inside to Conroy and the senior forward delivered, scoring twice to cut the deficit to five at 20-15. The Monarchs would find a quick spark off the bench when Matt Fiorino (North Brunswick, NJ, Bishop Ahr) connected on three straight treys in the next two minutes of play giving King's the lead back at 27-25 with just over four minutes to play in the half. A deep three-point from Shaeffer at the horn sent Albright into the half with a 35-33 lead.
The teams traded baskets in the first eight minutes of the second half before Albright slowly began to build their lead. A 10-1 run mid-way through the frame gave the Lions a 10 point advantage with 5:09 left to play. King's struggled to find the bottom of the net, converting just four baskets in the second twenty minutes of play. A layup from rookie Kyle Hammonds (Rosemont, PA, Radnor) cut the deficit to nine at 57-48, but the Monarchs were unable to turnover Albright and mount the full comeback.
Conroy finished with a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds, netting his 1,000th career point on the foul line late in the second half. He becomes the 25th player in school history to reach the milestone. Fiorino posted 14 points, going 4-for-6 from behind the arc in 15 minutes of action. Hammonds contributed nine points and three assists, while Kyle Stackhouse (Malvern, PA, Great Valley) added seven rebounds.
Derek Hall joined Shaeffer in double figures for Albright finishing with 11 points and eight rebounds. Cornell Mickens and Shane Irwin added seven points each.
King's will break for the Thanksgiving holiday before traveling to Muhlenberg College on Monday for a non-conference game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Allentown, Pa.
