King's Cagers Come up Short Against Misericordia, Gain Freedom Playoff Berth with Wilkes Loss to DeSales

KING'S MEN FALL 78-63 TO MISERICORDIA, GAIN FREEDOM PLAYOFF BERTH WITH WILKES LOSS TO DESALES
 
DALLAS -- Dom DelPrete scored 22 points and Jeff Slanovec added 17 as the Misericordia University men's basketball team posted a 78-63 victory over visiting King's College in an important Freedom Conferecne matchup Tuesday in the Anderson Center. Despite the loss, King's gained a spot in the Freedom Conference tournament after Wilkes suffered a 75-64 hhome loss to DeSales.
 
With the loss, King's slipped to 11-13 overall and 7-6 in Freedom Conference play while Misericordia improved to 14-10 and 8-5 in league games.
 
In the first half the Monarchs got off to a quick start thanks to Mike Wagner who drained two three-pointers and a short jumper to give King's an 8-0 advantage 3:18 into the contest.  Misericordia, however, would chip away and used a 16-8 run to tie the score at 16-16 on a Dom DelPrete basket at the 14:22 mark.
 
The teams played on even terms for the next 10 minutes and with the game tied 26-26, the Monarchs used four points from Jim Schule and a driving basket by Dan Maguschak to forge ahead 32-26. The Cougars, however, countered with a three-pointer by Jeff Slanovec and a short jumper by DelPrete to cut the lead to 32-31 with 0:55 left in the half.  But Maguschak drained a big three-pointer for King's at 0:40 as the Monarchs took a 35-31 lead into the halftime break.
 
Misericordia came on fire in the second half as DelPrete opened with a traditional three-point play, then added anotehr bucket to give the Cougars a 36-35 lead. After a King's bucket, Robbie Johnson canned a three for a 39-37 Cougar advantage. After Kyle Stackhouse canned a runner, Marcus Little canned a three-pointer to put Misericordia ahead 42-39. Conroy then made one-of-two charity tosses for King's, but Slanovec scored five straight points to put the Cougars on top 47-40.
 
The Monarchs answered with seven straight points on buckets by Mike McCready and Stackhouse and a three-pointer by Wagner with 11:41 left to cut the lead to 52-50. Misericordia, however, answered with a 6-0 surge to build a 58-50 lead following a Robbie Johnson lay-up at the 9:11 mark.

The Cougars continued to control play as a three-pointer by Williams and a driving lay-up by Johnson pushed the score to 65-52 at the 5:54 mark. After a Maguschak basket, Williams drained back-to-back three-pointers ti give Misericordia a 71-56 lead with  4:56 on the clock.
 
Following a Conroy basket for King's, Ethan Eichhorst nailed a trey and DelPrete added a jumper to push the score to 78-58 with 2:19 left in the contest.
 
Wagner led King's with 14 points while Conroy and Schule added 13 and 12 points respectively. Stackhouse distributed eighrt assists while tallying nine points.
 
The Monarchs will wrap up the regular-season Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. contest at cross-town rival Wilkes University.
