KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS FREEDOM CONFERENCE OPENER WITH EASTERN
ST. DAVID'S -- Reigning Freedom Conference "Pitcher of the Year" Lindsey Hoerner tossed a one-hitter and drove in the lone run of the game as the King's College softball team defeated league rival Eastern University 1-0 Saturday in the opening game of a doubleheader in St. David's. Eastern, however, took the second game 11-8 as the teams settled for a split.
In the opener, Hoerner was brilliant as she took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. With two out, Stephanie Weaver broke up the no-hitter with a single up the middle. Hoerner, however, would not be fazed as she retired the next seven batters to end the game. The Lady Monarchs standout struck out seven hitters and did not issue a walk.
King's, meanwhile, scored its lone run in the first inning when Kaitlyn Seigfried singled, advanced to second base on a passed ball, and scored on a Hoerner single to centerfield.
In the nightcap, Eastern built a 6-2 lead after two innings. King's answered with four runs in the third to tie the game at 6-6 thanks to a two-run singe by Annie Erndl and RBI base hits from Gretchen Tholen and Katie Fry. Hoerner led King's offense with a 3-for-4 showing and was the lone multi-hit player in the game.
Eastern, though, would tally three runs in the third to take a 9-6 lead. King's countered with two in the top of the sixth inning when Siegfried singled and Hoerner belted a two-run home run to cut the lead to 9-8. Eastern, however, countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the final score to 11-8.
Siegrfried was 4-for-4 while Tholen and Fry added two hits apiece. Erndl took the pitching loss, allowing all 11 runs, nine which were earned, while striking out five batters and walking four.
King's returns to action Thursday at 3:00 p.m. with a double-header against DeSales University in a rematch of the 2009 Freedom Conference championship game won by King's.
