KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH DESALES, 3-1, 4-6
WILKES-BARRE – Freshman Kaitlin Siegfried hit a three-run home run in the sixth innings to rally the King's College softball team to a 3-1 victory over visiting DeSales University in the opening game of a Freedom Conference doubleheader Thursday at the Betzler Athletic Complex. DeSales salvaged a split by taking the nightcap 6-4.
With the split, King's stands at 7-9 overall and 2-2 in the Freedom Conference while DeSales is now 11-10 and 5-1.
In the opener, King's trailed 1-0 entering the bottom half of the sixth inning with DeSales hurler Katie Morrissey holding onto a no-hitter. Annie Erndl singled and advanced to second, then third on wild pitches. After Samantha Hornberger drew a walk, Siegfried drove the first pitch from Morrissey over the left centerfield fence to put King's on top 3-1.
King's pitcher Lindsey Hoerner would retire DeSales in order in the seventh to seal the victory. King's finished with four hits in the game while Hoerner tossed a six-hitter herself, striking out four batters.
In the nightcap, DeSales jumped out to a 5-0 lead after their first at-bats and never trailed in the game. King's chipped away with two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Monarchs added another run in the fourth when Katie Fry doubled and scored on a single from Meghan Galvin. King's added another run in the sixth when Fry doubled and scored on a RBI single from Kayla Rutkoski,
Fry and Rutkoski led King's with two hits each. Erndl was the losing pitcher, allowing five earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. Hoerner pitched the final six and one-thirds, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out three batters.
