King's Softball Sweeps Delaware Valley in Important Conference Twin Bill

KING 'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS DELAWARE VALLEY

 

WILKES-BARRE – The King's College softball team picked up a pair of important victories on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of fellow Freedom Conference contender Delaware Valley College at the Betzler Athletic Complex.

 

King's won the first game 10-6 before taking the nightcap 12-8.

 

In the opener, King's overcame a 3-0 deficit after the Aggies' first at-bats but scored five runs in the bottom of the first. The offense was keyed by a two-run single from Lindsey Hoerner, a sacrifice fly RBI by Katie Fry, and a two-run single off the bat of Rachel Zinni.  King's added three more in the second inning take a 8-3 lead when Fry drove in Gretchen Tholen from third base on an infielder ground out and Samantha Hornberger added a two-run double. In the third inning, the Lady Monarchs took a 10-3 lead  when Zinni singled, Meaghan Galvin doubled, and Tholen delivered a two-run single. 

 

Galvin, Tholen, Zinni, and Kaitlyn Siegfried had two hits apiece for the Lady Monarchs. Hoerner was the winning pitcher, allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out six batters.

 

In the nightcap King's took a 2-0 lead in the forst inning on a two-run double by Hoerner., The Lady Monarchs added a run in the second when Hornberger reached base on an error and later scored after a base hot from Galvin.  After the Aggies countered with three runs in the top of the third inning to tie the score, King's quickly took a 4-3 lead in the bottom half when Siegfried walked, moved to second on a Christie Parfitt bunt, then scored on a base hit form Hornberger.  

 

Delaware Valley pushed across four runs in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead, but King's immediately answered with four runs of its own. Kayla Rutkowski reached base on an error and Galvin singled but a Delaware Valley error allowed Rutkowski to score on the play. Aftre a Tholen walk, Siegfried followed with a RBI single. Parfitt then drove in Tholen form third with an infield ground out as the Lady Monarchs took a 8-7 lead.

The Aggies would tie the score with an unearned run in the top of the sixth. King's though, responded with four big runs, keyed by a two-run single by Parfitt, a RBI double from Hornberger, who would eventually score herself from third on an Aggie error.

 

Galvin led King's by going 4-for-5 while Hoerner was 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI. Hornberger, Siegfried added two hits each for King's.

 

Hoerner picked up the win in relief of starter Annie Erndl, tossing the final four innings where she allowed three runs, two earned, with five strikeouts.

 

King's will next travel to face Oneonta State University Tuesday at 3:030 p.m. in Oneonta, NY
