KING'S BASEBALL POST 6-0 VICTORY OVER PENN STATE ABINGTON
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team scored five runs in the first two innings as the Monarchs posted a 6-0 victory over visiting Penn State Abington on Tuesday in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
The Monarchs reached the scoreboard with three runs in the first inning. Rob Fravel hit a single through the left side and later advanced to third on a Chris Sweeney double down the left field line. Matt Unger would loft a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in the first run. Brian Mikus smacked a triple to right center field for the second run. Eric Matula followed with a RBI single to right field for the 3-0 King's lead.
Joey Troxell would double down the left field line to start the bottom of the second inning and advanced to third on a Fravel single to right field. Troxell later scored from third on a double steal. Sweeney then delivered a long solo home run to left center field to make the score 5-0.
King's added its final run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Pat Harsh started the inning with a single, then stole second base before finally scoring on a Rob Lemoncelli single to right field.
Penn State Abington was kept off the board on a fine pitching performance by freshman Pat Matthews who recorded his second win of the season by going seven innings and striking out two hitters. Ryan Weiner finished the game by pitching two innings and striking out three.
King's 13-hit attack was paced by Rich Acierno who went 2-for-3. Sweeney finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Rob Fravel and Eric Matula also went 2-for-4 as Fravel scored one run while Matula recorded one RBI.
The Nittany Lions were led by Nick Chiaverelli with two hits, while Joseph Nicholson and Matt Speckman were both able to get a hit each. Robert Morak took the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits.
King's returns to action Friday with a 3:30 p.m. matchup at local-conference rival Wilkes University.
