KING'S SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR AT WILKES

EDWARDSVILLE –  The King's College softball team suffered through its slimmest hitting performance of the season as the Lady Monarchs dropped both ends of a doubleheader to host Wilkes University.

Wilkes won the first game 1-0, then captured the second game 8-0.  With the sweep, King's falls out of a three-way tie for first-place in the Freedom Conference with DeSales and Manhattanville as the Lady Monarchs slipped to 12-12 overall and 6-4 in conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile, improved to 8-17 and 3-6.

In the opener, King's wasted an outstanding pitching performance by Lindsey Hoerner as the Lady Monarch standout tossed a two-hitter and struck out nine batters. With King's managing just four hits themselves, Wilkes took advantage of the only mistake Hoerner made in the game when Kristy Ordile hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for the lone run of the game.  Hoerner led King's offensively with two base hits, including a double. Meaghan Galvin also doubled for the Lady Monarchs.

In the second game, Wilkes scored two runs in the second inning but put the game away with six runs in the fourth.  King's managed just one hit in the game off of Wilkes' hurler Maureen Pelot who struck out six batters.

Gretchen Tholen posted the lone King's hit with a double in the third inning.  Annie Erndl took the pitching loss for King's, allowing five earned runs on six hits before giving way to Hoerner in the fourth.

King's returns to action Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. home doubleheader against Baptist Bible College.
