KING'S SOFTBALL SWEEPS TWIN BILL FROM FDU-FLORHAM AS HOERNER DOMINATES IN CIRCLE
WILKES-BARRE -- Senior pitcher Lindsey Hoerner put on a masterful performance, tossing two complete-game victories while allowing a combined five hits while striking out 14 batters as the King's College softball team picked up a critical doubleheader sweep of visiting FDU-Florham Saturday at the Betzler Athletic Complex.
King's won the first game 2-0 before capturing the nightcap 7-1.
With the wins, King's improved to 17-13 overall, but more important, upped their Freedom Conference record to 8-4 with just two league games remaining. FDU, meanwhile, slipped to 13-21 and 3-9.
In the process the Lady Monarchs clinched a berth in the Freedom Conference playoffs. King's is tied for second-place with Manhattanville. The teams will square off next Saturday in Purchase, NY in the regular-season finale.
In the opener, Hoerner was brilliant as she allowed just two hits and struck out 10 batters. Her performance was important as FDU hurler Megan McInaw pitcher a solid game as well, keeping the Lady Monarchs off the board until the sixth inning.
In the inning, Hoerner reached base on a one-out a double and Christine Parfitt reached base on a FDU error as pinch runner Traino moved to third base. Katie Fry then delivered an RBI single as Parfitt moved to third. Samantha Hornberger then followed with a run-scoring single to give the Lady Monarchs the 2-0 victory.
Kaitlin Siegfried, Hoerner, and Hornberger were all 2-for-3 in the game.
In the nightcap, King's trailed 1-0 until scoring twice in the third inning when Meaghan Galvin and Gretchen Tholen both singled. Galvin stole third base and scored on a throwing error on the play while Tholen later scored from third base on a passed ball.
King's added five more runs in the fourth inning as Galvin drilled a two-run double, Tholen followed with a RBI single, and Siegfried belted a run-scoring triple, later scoring on a single from Hoerner.
Hoerner, meanwhile, allowed just three hits in the game and struck out four batters. After allowing a single in the fourth inning, the Lady Monarch standout did not allow another hit the rest of the way.
Galvin led King's by going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Tholen was 2-for-3 what two runs and a RBI while Hoerner was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
King's returns to action Monday with a 3:30 p.m. home doubleheader against Muhlenberg College at the Betzler Complex.
