KING'S WOMEN'S TENNIS UPSENDS HUNTER, 5-4

WILKES-BARRE – The King's College women's tennis team dropped two of three doubles contests and the first two matches in singles, but the Lady Monarchs fought back to post an impressive 5-4 victory over visiting Hunter College Friday at Kirby Park.

With the win, King's improved to 10-7 while Hunter slipped to 13-4. The Hawks won the City University of New York Conference and have qualified for the 201- NCAA Division III National Tournament.

The match started with doubles as King's team of Maria Cometa and Lauren Breen posted the lone win with a 8-0 blanking in the third flight.

After the Lady Monarchs dropped singles matches in the number-one and number-two flights, King's rebounded to win the final four contests. Rachel Hoffnagel posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles while MAC runner-up  Lauren Breen followed with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph. At number-five singles, Cometa posted her second win of the day with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 triumph that knotted the score at 4-4.

In the last match to be completed, Diana Darby came up big for King's as she clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 decision.

King's returns to action Monday with a 4:00 p.m. contest against Susquehanna University at Kirby Park.
