KING'S SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH MANHATTANVILLE, SECURES SECOND-SEED

PUCHASE , NY – Meaghan Galvin his a three-run home run in the fifth inning as the King's College softball team salvaged a split with host Manhattanville College Saturday in Purchase, NY.   Manhattanville won the first game 2-0.

With the split, King's stands at 19-15 overall and 9-5 in the Freedom Conference while Manhattanville is 18-17-1 with an identical 9-5 league record. Misericordia swept Eastern to also finish 9-5 and force a three-way tie for second place. King's, however, will gain the second-seed in the conference playoffs by virtue of a league tie-breaking criteria. Manhattanville will be the third seed while Misericordia finishes fourth.

In the second game King's trailed 1-0 until the sixth inning when Kayla Rutkowski singled and Annie Erndl was hit by a pitch.  Galvin then drilled a pitch over the left field fence to give the Lady Monarchs a 3-1 lead.

King's added a run in the sixth when Christie Parfitt  led off with a single. After an infield out, Parfitt was advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Samantha Hornberger, and scored on the play following a Manhattanville throwing error.

The Valiants added a run in the seventh to bring the final score to 4-2.  Erndl was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.  Parfitt had two hits to top King's.

The opener featured a fierce pitching battle between King's Lindsay Hoerner and Manhattanville's Samantha Howe. Manhattanville scored the only runs of the game in the third inning as Howe hit a solo home run and Kathryn Moore doubled and later scored on a fielder's choice.

Hoerner was the hard-luck loser, allowing just four hits and striking out seven batters while Howe gained the win, allowing five hits with five strikeouts.  Rachel Zinni had two hits for King's while Hornberger and Rutkowski had one hits each for the Lady Monarchs.

King's will next compete in the Freedom Conference Championships Friday and Saturday at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown.
