Game Box Score

WAYNE, NJ – Damian DiLorio broke open a 7-7 game with a 35-yard fumble return for a touchdown as host William Paterson College pulled out a 14-7 victory over visiting King's College in a non-conference football matchup Saturday at Wightman Field in Wayne, NJ.

With the win, William Paterson improved to 2-0 while King's fell to 0-3.

With the game seemingly headed for overtime, the Monarchs were in the midst of making one last push to register a winning score. Beginning to drive with 6:14 left in the contest, King's advanced to its own 43-yard line and faced a third-and-eight play. From there Lavin was sacked by Dyron Moore and fumbled on the play. Pioneer linebacker Damien DiLorio picked up the loose ball and raced 35 yards for what proved to be the winning touchdown with 3:16 on the clock.

King's attempted one final comeback but on a fourth-and-12 play from its own 40, Lavin's pass to Glenn Ford fell incomplete with 1:37 on the clock. The Pioneers would then run out the clock to preserve the victory.

William Paterson scored on its first possession of the game following a King's punt. On the Pioneers first play from scrimmage, quarterback Rysn Gresick broke free for a 38 yard option keeper to the King's 19. After a 14-yard pass to Joe Muraglia moved the ball to the King's four. On the next play, Gresick made good on another option play to reach the end zone for the first points of the day.  Cory Mundt made good on the extra-point kick to give the Pioneers a 7:00 lead with 11:56 left in the first quarter

King's countered when Lavin found David Abdalla for a nine-yard gain to the King's 42. Facing a fourth-and-six from the King's 48, the Monarchs were forced send out the punt team. King's however, ran a fake with a snap to short man Dan DiClementi who picked up the first down with a 13 yard gain to the Paterson 39. After a 15-yard pass to Jay Torres, a roughing the quarterback penalty on the Pioneers moved the ball to the Paterson 10. Three plays later Lavin found tailback Matt Spencer out of the backfield for a three-yard touchdown pass to cap a 12-play, 67-yard drive. Ryan Cain added the conversion kick as King's knotted the score at 7-7 with 6:26 remaining in the first quarter.

Paterson threatened midway through the second quarter when the Pioneers drove 81 yards to the King's four. Two plays later, however, Gresick fumbled and Monarch freshman Cehmah Tudae-Turboh recovered at the Monarch 14 to end the threat.

After the Monarchs were forced to punt, the Pioneers took over possession at the King's 41. After William Paterson drove to the King's 12 the Monarch defense stiffened and the Pioneers were unable to capitalize when Mundt missed a 29-yard field goal attempt with a 2:31 left in the half, leaving the teams deadlocked at 7-7 at the break.

Paterson attempted to take the lead on its first possession of the second half when a 13-yard pass to Chris Manfredo and a 20-yard completion to Matt Reggio moved the ball to the Monarch 24. On a fourth-and-five from the King's 20, the Monarch defense came through again when Dawys German carried for just four yards to give King's possession at its own 16.

The Monarchs were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt, but a short kick out of bounds gave the Pioneers excellent field position at the King's 30.  On third-and-nine, Monarch linebacker Mike Briggs came up big when he stripped Matt Reggio of the ball and Edwyn Edwards recovered for King's at its own 19 to end another Paterson threat.

After another King's punt gave the Pioneers possession at the King's 48 the Monarchs defense created another turnover on second down when Ryan Cordingly stripped Joe Nuraglia on a short pass play and Nick Bienke recovered the fumble at the William Paterson 49.

But the Monarchs offense was once again shut down as the Paterson defense held firm and forced King's to punt again as the Pioneers took over at their own 35.

King's would take over at its own eight-yard line following a Pioneer punt with 6:47 left in the contest. The Monarchs used eight plays to advance to the 43-yard line where Moore and DiLorio combined to make the winning defensive play.

William Paterson controlled the game statistically, outgaining King's in total yards 273-118. The Monarchs, who managed just seven first downs in the game, were limited to just 46 rushing yards on 32 carries, averaging just 1.4 yards each attempt. King's also punted nine times in the game, equaling the second most punts in a game in program history.

Lavin was 14-of-26 passing for 72 yards on the day but was sacked five times/ Ford had a team-high three catches for 14 yards while Jay Torres made two receptions for 20 yards. Spencer led King's rushers with 12 yards on four carries
