KING'S WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM HOLDING “STRIKE OUT ALS” NIGHT TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE DRIVING FOR LIFE FOUNDATION

WILKES-BARRE – When the King's College women's soccer team plays host to Lycoming College tonight at 7:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium, the game will have far greater meaning than a simple win or a loss. The game will serve as a fundraiser with an opportunity for increased awareness of the disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Brianne Schmidt
Just over a year ago, Donn Schmidt, the father of King's women's soccer standout Brianne Schmidt (left), passed away from ALS.  With Donn's birthday being today (September 29), the Lady Monarchs will hold its first “Strike Out ALS with the King's College Women's Soccer Team" event, held in conjunction with tonight's women's soccer game.

Monies raised will benefit The Driving for Life Foundation (now known as the ALS TDI foundation), an organization that looks to fund ALS research in hopes of finding a cure.

Green bracelets, similar to the Live Strong bracelets, made famous by Lance Armstrong, that read "Driving for Life" will be sold for $3.00 each. Car magnets that read “Strike Out ALS” will be sold for $5.00. Donations will also be accepted. A table will be set up near the entrance to McCarthy Stadium where the aforementioned items will be available for purchase.

“ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord,” Schmidt stated. “ALS effects every patient differently. In the case of my dad, he lost function in his arms first, then his legs, and then his speech. His last year was spent in bed, and the only way we were able to communicate with him was through a computer. Like so many other diseases, the cause of ALS is still unknown and a cure has yet to be found. Today  is my Daddy's birthday, and I thought it would be great to use our home game against Lycoming as an opportunity to raise money for the Driving for Life Foundation, an organization determined to help fund ALS research in hopes to someday find a cure."

Come out and support the King's College Women Soccer team by cheering them on to victory and help us in raising money to find a cure to such a horrible disease.
