HOBOKEN, NJ – Jessica Falcone notched two goals to help propel No. 17 The College of New Jersey to a 3-1 victory over King's College on the first day of play at the Stevens Invitational Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss King's sees its overall mark drop to 1-1 on the year.
Falcone would give TCNJ a 1-0 lead when she scored off an assist from Kathleen Notos at the 24:12 mark of the first half. The Lady Monarchs would answer back five minutes later when junior Jenera Quinones (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) deflected a corner attempt into the net from junior Shawna Walp (Levittown, PA/Bristol) to tie the game at 1-1. Moments later, Notos would find the back of the net herself to give TCNJ the lead back at the 31:38 mark. From there, Falcone would tally her second goal of the contest when she redirected a shot from Mary Waller to extend the lead to 3-1.
The second half proved to be a defensive battle as both teams were unable to garner any offense. King's goalie senior Erin McGinley (Kingston, PA/Wyoming Seminary) finished with five saves in net, while Shannon Syciarz made two stops for TCNJ to record the win.
TCNJ outshot King's 15-12, while holding a slim 9-5 advantage in penalty corners.
King's will return to action tomorrow when they face the host No. 18 Stevens Institute of Technology at 3:00 p.m. on day two of play in the two-day tournament.
