King's Women's Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision to DeSales

10/22/2011 6:52:00 PM

Wilkes-Barre, PA-- The King's College women's soccer team rally fell short as they dropped a 3-1 decision to DeSales Staurday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.

The Bulldogs (3-12-1, 1-5) struck first with an unassisted goal by Christina Piertobon when she gathered a ball at the top of the box just 2:03 into the game.  DeSales added goals by Haley Bollmer and Amanda Fink before the half.

Becky Chateauneuf put the Lady Monarchs (3-13, 0-6) on the board with a shot from 30 yards out that drifted over the goalie, off the crossbar and in at 73:00.

After being outshot 7-3 in the first half King's held a 5-3 advantage in the second.  Each team had one first half cornerkick.

Lauren Duguid took the loss in net making four saves two in each period.

For Chateauneuf, the goal was a reward for undeserved hardship on the field for a player who had an opportunity to break King's career scoring record after leading the squad in scoring each of her first two years. But Chateauneuf, who was the 2008 Freedom Conference "Rookie of the Year" and a two-time Freedom Conference all-star, had her 2010 junior year cut off with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. After undergoing surgery, Chateauneuf returned to the team in late August to open training camp for the 2011 season but partially tore the same left ACL that had been surgically repaired.

Rather than opting for season-ending surgery, Chateauneuf bravely chose rehabilitation for  nearly six weeks to strenghten the supporting muscles around the knee area with hopes of returning to the line-up by mid-season. The hard work paid off as Chateauneuf played her first game October 1.

The goal against DeSales was a triumph of sorts for the rugged road back to the pitch. It marked the first goal for Chateaumeuf since September 29, 2010.

The Lady Monarchs are back in action Monday when they travel to Alvernia to finish a game that was suspended at the half with the score tied 1-1.  The game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
